odd problem

odd problem

i was hearing a weird squeak inside my truck, and the squeak corrosponded with my speedometer needle jumping up and down. so just for fun i pulled off the speed sensor wire/cable/whatever from the sensor on the t-case, and the squeak went away. i removed the sensor, cleaned it, lubed it, re-installed it, threaded the wire/cable back on, and it still squeaks.

but the weird part is that the squeak seems to be coming right from the gauge cluster. i don't know if the gauge cluster is squeaking, or if the sensor wire/cable is acting as a tuning fork and transferring the squeak from my t-case up to my dash.

any suggestions??

Search "speedometer squeal". If those are the symptoms you're having, which it sounds to me you're having, you'll either need to replace the cable (like $5) or try some of that graphite spray stuff they talk about.

your cable probably needs to be oiled. Usually a little 3-in-one oil down the cable will take care of it. You'll have to remove it from the back of the instrument cluster.

that is possible..or worst case scenario your cluster is making the noise

Duct tape and WD-40, it will fix anything. Use the duct tape around the end of the cable and the WD40 red tube. Make sure the red tube and cable are grease free before you spray for a good seal. Tape it tightly with several layers. Then squirt away! The sealed pressure will force the WD-40 oil up through the cable!

Same problem on my motorcycle.. Fixed it right away.

the spedo in my old ruckdid the same thing, it trned out the cable had a small kink, so i put in a new stereo. haha

wow, thanks guys, turns out its more of common problem than i thought. i thought i was way out on a limb, but i guess i was right.
