I need some assistance on the wiring differences for an o2 sensor between an 86 4runner and an 88 4runner with 22RE's.

I have a body of an 86 4runner which has the o2 sensor in the exhaust manifold. I have put the 22RE engine, engine harnes, computer, and complete exhaust from the 88 into the 86 4runner body.

My problem is the harnes plug for the 86 o2 is in the engine compartment and the o2 on the 88 exhaust is by the cat. The harnes plug for the o2 on the 86 is a single wire and the o2 in the 88 exhaust has 4 wires coming out of it.

What the best way for me to get the o2 sensor working correctly for this application?

 

the best way to hook it up is eather change the exhaust manifold to the 86 manifold or you can drill and tap the 88 manifold . i have tried lengthening the wire on a truck i done to use the 88 location but it won't work.

 

Did you try using the heated/latter model sensor wiring? IOW, the four wire set up from the newer vehicle?

If one is going to use a later model design ECU (in this case from the '88), one needs to use all they can that would otherwise come equipped with it......obviously....so that the ECU controlls everything properly. So, I don't see any reason why one couldn't use the heated, 4 wiring system in this case. One couldn't use the single wire system effectively. The O2 sensor location in the '88 requires that it be heated. But, if I understand what's being asked here correctly, and if this makes sense to you, mount the sensor in the '88 location and use the entire 4 wire system from the '88 to hook it all up.

 

That is what I figured I would probably have to do. I guess I just need to track down where all the wires go in the cab and hopefully duplicate it in the 86 body.

this thread answered my problem...i bought my 88 pu 22re and after driving it, it started to run an idle worse an worse...come to find out. Where the previous owner had chopped the exhaust off...he musta been dumb cuz he hacked off the pipe before the o2 sensor...so when i went hunting for it...the only thing i could find was clipped up set of four wires...(sheakes head dissapointed) so this clarrified that the four wires are for the o2...thanks
