Not my month 22re dead

Hello

I just wanted to start to get a idea on what kind or price to expect for this project. I have a 91 4runner 5sp 4x4 22re the other night it died when i was leaving my house. Started to dig into it and found a few problems mainly a bad plug wire. once i got it started it never ran right it was like the timing was way off so i set up the timing light and started to adjust the timing when there was a loud metal pop clunk then it died. Everything on the outside looks good the timing chain and valve train look good but it wont turn over. i think a rod came apart it was burning quite a lot of oil in the last few months as well. So i think that i need to do a total rebuild. when i bought this truck i was told it had a jasper motor in it and someone told me that they bore to max specs so they are not rebuild able. i'm just looking for some insite here, I just want it stock and running like new. i have experience rebuilding Chevy 4.3 motors.

There fairly cheap motors to rebuild for the most part. Of course in your case you will need to find a donor block it sounds like. For swaps I recommend a 2.7 from the newer tacomas or the 3.4 toyota v6.

These engines are very simple and cheap to rebuild - since you already have experience you will not have any problems.

Between machine work and new parts for a rebuild you are looking at about $1000 to do it right. This is also with EB parts.

Here's the machine work that I had done (Between 350 - 450 bucks)

Machine work;
Resurfaced\shaved Block & Timing cover
Resurfaced\shaved Head
Resurfaced Flywheel
Block 40 over
Crank checked and polished
Pistons machined to fit wrist pins

looking into a 2.7 swap i dont think that's in my price and time constraint right now so i'm putting a 22re back in

Are you looking at getting a longblock or shortblock? I am in need of the same info. I am also looking for someone who builds fair solid longblock. My motor has been buring alot of oil and its noisy as heck its on its last leg. Good Luck.

I would find a block and rebuild one. It took me two weeknds to fully rebuilt mine. Thats included removing machine work new pistons bearings crank, cam rockers and head. Then reinstalling everything. Wasnt that bad at all

Boring Specs for 22re

Sorry to hear about your 22re.

I work for JASPER and wanted to provide a little more info on our boring specs in the event it would help you.

We typically bore these engines to .030 or .040 oversize. I'd say 25% .030 & 75% .040

.040 is the max that we will bore.

In doing so, all cylinders will always be bored to the same tolerance so as to not have any odd sized cylinders.

hi my 22re is dead in the water as well. they say my timing chain may have cut a hole in my header and now they found coolant in my oil any help?

Timing chain cannot cut a hole in a header, I assume they said timing cover/chain cover which would lead to the coolant content of your oil.

hey you never know

haha, jk. naw these 22re are notorious for having the timing chain guides go, and the chain will grind through the cover and into a water jacket, causing the oil-antifreeze mix


I'm looking for a decent priced long block myself, but I may end up dropping in a complete mid-mileage junk yard motor and taring the stock motor with 293.5k miles on it now apart and rebuilding it from the ground up

@gametom- probably too late but used engines can be had for anywhere from 400 to 1000 dollars, stock rebuilds from 700-1700. Steer clear of the Japanese import 22RE's as Japan NEVER had the 22RE- you'll likely get a 21R which is compatible with, but about 400 cc's smaller than the 22RE with a corresponding reduction in power.

@first toyo owner- the timing chain can only wear into the timing chain cover, exposing the water pump passage to the crankcase causing coolant to flood the oil pan. If it was caught soon enough, a new timing chain cover (or repair the old one), new chain guides and chain and put it back together may be all you need. If it ran for too long with coolant in the oil pan, it's likely the crankshaft and rod bearings need replaced.

the guy from JASPER just said that the company will only bore the cylinder to thier max of .040 over. i just saw one the other day that was bored .060 over. so you might want to check and see if you are already to the max. and i picked up a complete motor form the junk yard for 450 pulled mine. swapped the parts and put the junker in. in one weekend. and that was 4 years ago still running strong.
