Noob / Header ? / New Alt info

Hey guys. So this is my first post, but I have been a lurker on this forum for quite a while. I want to thank everyone for all the great collective information. I hope to help out with my own knowledge.

So heres the deal.

I picked up an 87 Sr5 the other day (straight trade for my 91 pickup) with a blown head gasket, no biggy, I rebuilt the head, with new valves and a cam from engine builder, oem head gasket, and some cheapo ebay gasket set for the small stuff. Just finished up the zuk mod with TJ springs to fix the saggy rear end, and am now just in a cheap restore mode.

Found a header from a guy on craigslist, which i believe is a Doug Thorley? Looks like the Tri-Y design, but the only info I have is that it came off a 86 pickup, anybody know for sure? Looks as if the O2 sensor bung was relocated, will it work in this location for the 4runner? Or should I have it relocated back to the original location?

Lastly, I know alot of guys have been swapping out thier alternators for higher output Gm models, But my Dad (who works for denso) found an OEM Denso alternator from a jaguar xj6 that puts out 150 Amps, and fits in the stock locations pretty well (need to bend the sliding bracket a little). It even uses the same connector as our trucks. The denso part number is 210-0406.
You do need to swap out the pulleys, as this one comes with one for a serpentine belt, the the v-belt pulley needs its mounting hole enlarged a little bit.

I haven't installed mine yet, but once i upgrade the wiring harness Ill let you know how she works.

Thanks everyone!

Wes

Don't think that header is going to work for ya wes. Looks as though its from a 22r not an re. I could be wrong, it's happened before, but look at the flange on the top or upper part of the header. How or where are you going to hook up the PAIR tubes? Isn't there two holes on the center lower section that bolts to the head as well? Pop your hood and look at your old exhaust manifold and see if things line up. I would be willing to bet they don't but like i said and for your sake i hope i'm wrong.

Yea Im a little worried about that too. Luckily my rid doesn't use the PAIR tubes, just the block-off plates, and I know the head has the pear-shaped ports and the header has round. But for $35, I couldn't pass on it, even if I need to clean it up and sell it for a different one.

Thorley's application pages are pretty confusing, but luckily they are just down the street from me, so I might just take it in and see what they say.

Thanks!

Look at this thread and look at the header for a 22re. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...2/index10.html
Kinda different right? I know it's a lc header but they all have to fit one way or another on the head and notice the little extra holes on there for the PAIR system? Look at yours. Looks different right? Not being a debbie downer just don't want you to try and install that thing on your pretty motor and bugger it up trying to get a part to fit that isn't made for your 22re.

Yea, I think your right. The biggest difference I see is that there is two inner bottom mounts on the stock exhaust, and a single one on the header. Well, we may just be putting this beast on ebay, or modding the flange to fit.
Thanks Mightymouse for pointing that out before I got halfway into attempting to install it.

I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that header will work, would recomend running a Remflex gasket though. I placed and extra stud for the center but a bolt will work too. The center hole is so that the manufacture can use one model for the 20R (center hole) and the 22RE that uses the two holes next to the center hole. My DT header has it. Of course if your shelling out over $500 for a header you expect on header per model 20R and 22r and 22RE. The Flange and design is similar to the DT but not exactly. The DT gasket will work too but the OEM style will be a massive fail.

Wish I'd known about that alternator about 6 monthes ago. I did the GM which is fine but I'm a bit of a Toyota purest

i put a 20R header onto my 22R.

that Header will work just fine.

But why are all of the bolt holes like they are....Split?...mine weren't like that and i've never seen any like that.....

i even put a 22RE exhaust manifold on my '80 20R when i sold it. and it worked JUST FINE and didn't leak a bit.

That is VERY interesting about the alternator!!!!!
know how much it puts out at idle?
i wonder if it'd work for the 3vz? i never paid attention to my Alt. Wiring on my '86...is it different?

if you wind up not using that header, I am interested in it. I've got the 22r.

nice score though.

The problem is that the later model 22re/r head has pear shaped exhaust ports.. So even if he does install it, it'll be bottlenecked.

Okay, first off, i know first hand that the 79-85 22R heads have ROUND EXHAUST HOLES
Second off, 86+ 22R have pear shaped exhaust ports.
So what makes you think that bolting a round holed header onto a pear shaped head would have ANY advantages whatsoever?

Easy enough to understand. Not optimal but far superior to stock.

peow noone makes a specific pear shaped exhaust ports on their headers. noone.

The manufactures use extra holes in the header flange that allows for the post 85 pair tubes to bolt up and accept the pair system though the pear shape.

all the pear shape is for is the pair tubes. the pre 86's had a different way the pair system works though the head which resulted in round holes.

so in short Pear = P.A.I.R.

now if your willing to delete your pair system then any 20/22r header will fit the 20/22r heads. 79-95. Otherwise you have to use year specific headers. Or drill your own P.A.I.R. Tube holes.

Easy way to test this theory is to look at the NWOR site.

http://www.northwestoffroad.com/parts/20-22header.html

1979-95 Header System non-emission version N31001
1979-83 Header System (Type A)* with smog equipment fittings, O2 sensor and hot air pick-up N31002
1984-85 Header System (Type B)* with smog equipment fittings, O2 sensor and hot air pick-up N31003
1984-85 Header System (EFI) with O2 sensor only N31004
1986-87 Header System (Type B)* with smog equipment fittings, O2 sensor and hot air pick-up N31005
1986-87 Header System (EFI) with O2 sensor only N31006
1988-95 Header System (EFI)* (Type B)* with smog equipment fittings, O2 sensor and hot air pick-up N31010

What do they mean by smog (emissions) equipment fittings ? P.A.I.R. Tubes.

Still think I am wrong and it won't work, then call up NWOR and tell them they are full of crap.

oh and you can also tell LCE that their PAIR block off plates bottle neck the exhaust system too.

Way to make a generalized statement about people in the thread. so by all means school us smart guy. And feel free to fill me in on how that header will work with that 22re. I'd be willing to bet it'll leak like a sieve with that oddly shaped flange. I'd be betting dollars to doughnuts it's not going to work but apparently you've done it with that specific header as you gave advice about it.

Here I'll help you out. Research the Doug Thorley header, the flange pattern is very similar. With the OEM gasket you are right it will leak bad. With the DT header gasket or the Remflex (which I really like better than the DT) it will seal up wonderfully. Of course you will need to seal the center hole but Toyota happen to thread that hole in the head so easy enough. The reason Toyota threaded the hole is that early 22r heads could be mounted with either a 20r manifold or 22r manifold. It managed to stay in the design for years. Feel free to search this as well.

So should I get a dozen donuts?

and not talking about all 22r headers just that one. Look at the flange would you put that on your motor? Look at the welds. you think that thing won't leak? How the heck is he gonna use block off ports with the flange like that? It'll never sit straight with a block off kit on it.
