Noisy Tranny, 5 spd 4x4

Hey everybody, I'm new to the site and am pretty impressed so far. Glad I found it!

I searched the the threads for my situation and some got close but I found no real ringers so I decided to post a new one.

My gear:
1987, 22r-e(?) 5 speed(G52 if reading tag right) 4x4, reg cab PU

My condition:
Just bought the truck for my son's 1st, seller said he recently installed used tranny. When we start driving more we discovered that 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gears run noisy. 4th is quiet. Gear entry at idle (1st & rev) are a bit tricky, driving shifts require some care and patience. Sometimes will gently and quietly "pop" out of 5th gear on deceleration comming off of the throttle.

We changed the tranny and x-fer case oil w/std 80/90 gear oil and 1/2 qt Lucas oil stabilizer in each. I just couldn't bring myself to spend the extra bucks for synthetic oil yet on a questionable gear box. (the oil in both was cloudy and about the color of Butterscotch pudding) The fresh oil helped the shifting and idle entry and cut the noise by about 50%.

My questions:
1) Is any of this sounding "typical" to this tranny? Is there enough info given to offer opinions as to the cause, ie.. bearings, synchronizers, gears.... and level of repair needed?

2) I am intrigued by the thought of rebuilding the tranny with my son. Given good mechanical/technical apptitude and some good documentation is this an attainable project. Are there any particularly tricky techniques or special tool required?

3) If #2 is a "Go" can anybody point me to good parts and documentation.

Thanks,
Marty R

a few questiond just to make sure its just the trany and not any thing else here

in nutral does it make noise? with clutch on floor is it making noise if so could just be a bad clutch and thow out bearing!!! but you have to take out the trany and trasfercase to do that anyways hope it helps you any

you could rebuild that one or maybe think about upgrading to a W56. i have heard they are better. Im sorry im not too too familiar with the 4cyl trannys.

Check out www.marlincrawler.com for possible rebuild kits.

EDIT: check this out too. Its a list of all the options that 4x4 toyotas came with. It seems as though the W56 will work length wise...

Thanks for the replys and info.

I'm pretty sure the tranny is the culprit, all is quiet in neutral, in gear, clutch and clutch out. Gets noisy as begin to roll then through 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 4th is nice and quiet and 5th is noisy. Noise also increases somewhat with acceleration torque.

The second reply recommended a web site for more info. Based on photos there I think I may already have a W56 with a forward shift t-case. I believe both of my shifters are on the tail housing between the gear box and the t-case.

Your front main bearing is going out. Its not too hard to do it yourself. You will need some gear pullers.

Heres my very first post here about it
