i have a 1990 4runner with 3.0. i compared the readings to the fsm. the one I referred to was the vta - e2. idl - e2 measured open and vc-e2 measured 5.73. when i open the throttle the resistance across vta - e2 gradually increases, which according to the circuit in the manual it should but doesn't go the indicated 12 kohm. When the engine is running it idles fine but when I open full throttle it bogs down, has no power or acceleration and there is smell of unburnt gas in the exhaust. I have measured the vafm and it measures according to specs and when i disconnect the plug the engine shuts down. I thought maybe a vacuum leak or clogged cat at first, but verified that those were not the problems. I disconnected the cold start injector to make sure it wasn't flooding the plenum with gas and it wasn't. My babies momma's dad is a retired army mechanic and he has suggested the distributor but I really don't want to do shotgun maintenance on it. I would really like to troubleshoot to the specific problem to r and r the bad part which is why I am here looking for help. oh yeah, I have replaced the timing belt, which when I bought it a few months ago, was in need of a change... it is dead on, after quintuple checks to be sure. The guy I bought it from said he had let it set for a while and thought maybe some bad gas so a few cans of sea foam and 92 octane through a new fuel filter has the engine idling nice. Fuel Pressure is going to be next if it is not the tps.

also, I have no codes. I had a 51 for a little bit, but figured that was because I was messing around with the tps.

also, as for the idl - e2, that open reading is with the throttle in the open position.

So, what reading did you get on the IDL-E2 circuit with the .50mm guage inserted?

When you ran the throttle opening test, were there any dropouts on the meter, or did the meter always rise steadily. About midway of the throttle plate movement, the resistance should start dropping off as it approaches WOT. Did you see that happen?

and i did check out a couple of other threads about the vafm, which is why i suspect it to be bad, but the other problem is just giving me a reason to drink.

I got the same issue man, gonna order up a new tps since i know it wont hurt to slap a new one in there. Let me know how your search goes, and visa versa.

I've been looking everywhere for my answers but I might as well post this up here.

With my multimeter set at 2000 Ohm and the black (COM) wire connecting to E2 the whole time:

1. ETA-V2 @ throttle closed : 516

2. ETA-V2 @ throttle slowly opening from fully closed to fully locked open: 516 then gradually up to 1999 then to a number 1 all the way to the left, which I'm assuming is infinite.

3. IDL-E2 @ .508mm open : 017

4. IDL-E2 @ .813mm open : 030

What do you guys think?

Throttle fully closed : 663
Throttle fully open: infinite
Throttle .508mm open: 022
Throttle .838mm open: infinite (infinite is the 1 all the way to the left side on the mutimeter display right?)
