New truck owner needs advice on 92 4x4

Hi everyone, as the name says I am new to trucks. I have always owned Subarus and recently lost my Legacy to a drunken fool. I have replaced it with a 92 extended cab 4x4 and I hope I made the right choice. The problem I am having is in diagnosing a wicked shaking at about 70 km/h. I am taking it in to have the wheels balanced to begin with, but what else will cause this on these truck? My first guess was CV joints (especially because I can hear a crunching kinda sound with the steering at full lock at low speeds). I am no stranger to mechanical work but as I am unfamiliar with the particular quirks of these trucks I thought I would try here first and see if anybody had some advice. Thanks in advance, glad to find a forum as nicely laid out and managed as my regular haunt (ultimatesubaru.org). Oh yeah, any hints on where to find the FSM for this truck?

Welcome. Sounds like you are on the right track for your problem but if that doesn't solve it maybe an out of balanced drive shaft. The crunching sound you hear at full turn is your bumper stop. The rubber is probably worn away and its metal on metal causing the grinding sound. Is it a V6 or 4cyl?

Forgot the cardinal rule.....vehicle details! It's a V6 5 speed with 170,000 kms (100k miles). The body is pretty good. Nothing a sandblaster and a can of bedliner won't fix anyways. I know the headgasket history with these engines, but I don't know if it has been done on this one yet. I do headgaskets replacements on Subarus and on those you have to pull the motor to get at the heads. I'm not too worried about it, either Toyota will fix it or I will. Forgive me for not knowing, but where do I locate the bump stop? I need to have this truck pass safety inspection and don't have alot of time to work on it. Thanks for the help.

NEVER overheat the engine & you probably won't have any HG issues. I'd recommend torquing the head bolts an additional 1/8th turn if you ever open up the valve covers....FWIW.

Thanks for the info, that article was extremely helpful. I got knee deep into the truck this weekend after discovering that there are about two of these thing in wrecking yards in all of Ontario. When I had a mechanic who does safety inspections look it over he found several thing I had missed. Over the course of the last two days I have replaced the hanger bearing, spark plugs, oil & filter, muffler and piping (all welded, no clamps for me!), front drivers side body mount bracket (that was fun), and patched too many holes in the rockers and lower cab corners to count. I got the hanger bearing used and missing one of the tabs that bolt up to the bracket underneath. I took the corresponding tab off of the toasted bearing on my truck and did some creative fitting and welding to get it on the new one. I haven't road tested the truck yet, but it bolted up without much fuss so I am hoping it will be ok. I don't want to fork out $300.00 for a rubber framed bearing. I had to fabricate the body mount out of plate steel and angle iron and tie it into the inner fender and the rocker (what was left of it). I managed to scrounge a window out of an 89 I think. Altogether with the window, bearing, plugs, oil, and filter I have about $120.00 invested so far. Not bad for a $1500.00 purchase price.
