Ok so I'm kinda new to working on a 5speed and have some questions. first its a 91 4runner 4door 4wd 22re 5speed with 183k. so the first question is how can i check trans fluid or is it gear lube someone told me 4runners had a sealed trans and it was unnecessary. How can i tell what condition the clutch is in. what is involved in replacing the clutch time, tools, and difficulty. and finally if i replace it is a high pro clutch worth the money over stock.

no way to really check the fuild and chaning the clutch isint to mad with a few freinds and a trans jack about a 6hour job i would get the clutch from marlincrawler.com

You check a manuel trans by removing the fill plug on the side if the 90W slightly drips out then it is full . You can also see the condition of the fluid. If you just bought this truck just change the grease and then you will know the condition. You cant see the condition of the clutch unless you remove the trans., does it slip when you accel. ? is there about an inch of freeplay before you can feel pressure on the clutch pedal? does it release approx. halfway up ? if so then it is probably in good shape . If not change it.

JMO on gear oils, We operate heavy machinery with bull gears.. We never have to change the gear oils.. Just add to them if there low.. It's not that important to change every so miles. We put them under far worse loads and ground conditions that you ever could a truck, but if it gives you peace of mind, go ahead..but it's not a must do

You might be right Robrt32, but gear oil is pretty damn cheap compared to a transmission.

Personally, when I buy a used car, I change ALL the fluids so I know exactly where I'm starting from. (Note: ALL = oil, tranny, transfer, diffs, brake fluid, power steering, coolant - EVERYTHING)

Gear oil doesn't last forever. Granted, some of if stays in pretty good shape for a long time, if under "normal" operating conditions. You should change out the regular cheap stuff more often than the pure synthetic. Synthetics can outlast x many times the other. Between 30K-100K respectively, is about as long as you should go, to err on the side of caution. CHEAP INSURANCE.
