92 thanks for the pics but in my case the chain has been rotated unknown times so the bright link does not line up automatically........

can anyone tell me how to check for EXACT TDC without pulling the timing cover? It would be really hard to tell if it's one tooth off right? Would the timing bounce around?

 

yes..but....in getting it to TDC like i said, you should be able to tell if and how much you are off

orient harmonic balancer to "0", pull plug #1 see if piston is all the way up or all the way down...this should tell you if #1 is at TDC or directly opposite (i beleive) and see where your came gera / mark and bright link are oriented when you know you are at TDC

 

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR the thing runs off still. I'm so sick of this thing. Balancer at 0, cam dowel at 12 and the engine vibrates enough to feel in the cab. I don't know what to do......anyone wanna buy a 4runner?

Ok, bout the only thing you can do now is make sure the dist. is in correct...

B/c the mark for TDC, is the same exact one for BTDC.

Put the balancer at 0 and the cam at 12:00. Now you want to make sure the dist. rotor is pointing straight at the #1 plug on the cap and not #4.

 

what do you mean by "positive" interference? I understand the interference part but not the positive part.

 

I have a timing light........

the dist timing is dead on......5*btdc with the jumper in place.

 

I was always told there was positive and negative...

Positive, valves will hit...

Negative, no... But you can machine a head down on some cars where they will...

 

self duh! Check the compression...

 

if you are able to time it then the timing is not the issue, i would do the compression check, it could be something else giving you the bad idle problem, mine was a bad or sticking egr valve.

#1 - 125
#2 - 0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#3 - 75
#4 - 125

You could do a leakdown, or even a poor man's leakdown test if you wanted to make sure before you pull the head.

Yes and it was due to the valve seat/guide falling out on #4 intake......not my fault

Dunno all the valves seem to be moving up and down fine

By removing the head, replacing the valves and reinstalling the head...


And come on guy, nothing in life is free. No machine lasts forever. You just pulled a bad straw is all... Repair it and move on. Or buy a newer piece of junk compared to that truck and make payments and pay higher collision insurance for the next 7 years?

B/c you WILL NOT find a better 4cyl, 4WD truck than the one you're driving.

 

you realize that I just bought this engine NEW last year right and it has less than 9k miles and this is the second major issue? Don't give me the nothing in life is free speech....I work my butt off, go to school full time, and do volunteer work. I am broke, I spent 2k on a new engine + a bunch of new other parts last year. I would expect something to last without major issues a little longer than that. I'm getting sick of fixing other peoples mistakes.

The "Hey, I thought I bought a Toyota?" thread and the mentality some guys have put's me off.. "I know, I'll buy an old used vehicle and expect trouble free forever out of it!"


I'd (of course) take the engine back to them, but if they gave me grief, it's not worth it and I'd just DIY repair it...

 

the point is I do not have time to be pulling and shipping engines every few months plus it costs me money/time that I do not have.....every time I have to ship an engine it means several days of work by myself, weeks without the engine, putting off class and other important things, several oil filters, several gallons of oil, coolant, etc etc
