Need Some 89 4runner advice

So I just bought an 89 4runner. Pretty clean truck, minus the engine. It's a 5-speed with the 22re motor. It's will start, but sounds like it's twisting some sort of metal so I shut it off right away. I haven't been able to drop the pan or look at anything yet because it's been raining out. I bought the truck knowing it needs an engine, but since it starts and stays running would a rebuild be ok? And if you have bought a 22re longblock, and were happy could you let me know the company?

It could be something as simple as an accessory driven pulley or water pump making the noise. Take off all the belts and start it, then see if the noise goes away.

It could also be the timing chain rubbing somewhere.

Buy and automotive stethoscope at Harbor Freight, you can listen to the motor with the probe to try to find the source of the noise. You might get lucky and have it be an accessory.
