Need a motor and need some opinions.
So I am going to get a 22re this weekend for my 89 4x4 that has a cracked block and I had a couple of questions. The seller has a 22re out of a 4x4, complete, with approx 100k for 400$. He also has a complete 2wd 93 pickup with 130k that runs great but is rotted out for 700$. I would however have to pull that motor and I would be left with a rotted 2wd carcass in my driveway. So my questions are:
What would you guys do - complete motor for 400 or complete 2wd truck w/motor that I would have to pull for 700?
Are the motor in a 2wd and 4wd the same or would I have to switch pans, or what?
Thanks for the input!
Andy

Well the simple answer is take the one for $400 if you can't use anything else off the 4x2. However, there is something to be said for hearing and seeing a running motor.
Do you know the guy with the $400 one? Can you trust him? Does it really have only 100,000 miles? Has the either one ever had the timing chain replaced? Yada yada yada.
There are lots of questions you need to answer for yourself to be able to make a good decision. At least the running one you can compression check and so forth. You might consider trying to talk down the ownere of the rusty one to say $500 and explain why to him as to not insult him. For only a $100 difference, I would be more inclined to by that one.
When I was hunting for a motor, it seemed people were awfully proud of what they had. One guy claimed the motor in this wrecked truck was rebuilt with only 15K on it. When I went to look at it, it looked like it had never been out of the truck. There was oil everywhere from the timing cover leaking, he couldn't start it. It was a nightmare. I ended up buying a rebuild kit for mine and using a crank and rods out of a donor 22R I got for $50. It sounds like that isn't an option in your case.
It's funny though how now I have about 8K on mine and there isn't a sign of oil leaking from anywhere. I'd dure like to meet the guy that rebuilt that other piece of crap.

Excellent information. I dont know the guy and have no way of confirming that there is only 100k on the motor. I like the idea of doing a compression check and I would still have to see them both first of course. I am thinking about offering him 900 for both and putting some body work into the 2wd and keeping her going (on the road and not to scrap yard).
If I go with the truck however and use the 2wd engine for my 4wd, is there any difference the two? Would I have to swap anything over from my blown 4wd engine or are they identical? thanks for the reply.

There is no difference between the 4x2 and 4x4 22RE motors. You may want to look at the harness though. I'm not positive but I think there may be a slight difference in the plugs going to the injectors between 1993 and 1989. If you have the harness with the new motor, it should be a mute point.
