Don't forget to drive the new seal all the way home. Before driving it in, lightly grease the outside lip with multipurpose grease or bearing grease. I would put a just a little bit of grease on the inside lip too.
Yup yours has a nice looking groove. That's about what mine looked like at close to 200,000 miles. The special thinner front seal should seal it up good.
I have a Lisle 12600 Bearing Race and Seal Driver set that I bought from a local store. It works good to drive the seal into the pump. Works great for the races and oil seals on the front wheels too when servicing the wheel bearings.

My neighbor let me use his seal press I ended up putting a bigger one in not the one in this picture to cover the whole surface of the seal . Pretty sweet

Thanks I am putting a new water pump in .
Whats the Bible say about putting sealant on the gasket ? I was going to put a very small amount on both sides of the water pump gastket .
I was going to use Permatex Water pump gasket Maker 22071 It has the highest water glycol resistance in an RTV silicon
I have read many forums on this And I am going nuts some say apply it dry others say they use sealant and many types of different sealant .
I thought I would check back here and see what You guys are using to keep these water pumps from leaking my surface is super clean.
Any thoughts or advice ?

I used Permatex High Tack on both sides of the water pump gasket and timing cover gaskets. Permatex Aviation #3 will work too. No leaks.
The only knock about using RTV is that it gets over used while using a gasket, and ends up getting in the coolant. Some people use a thin coat of RTV with a gasket. I have no problem doing it that way, but just don't over do it unless you want it floating around in the coolant clogging stuff up.

I think you could go either way on putting some RTV gasket maker on the gasket and be just fine.
If your timing cover sealing surface is really clean and free of gouges, the gasket just by itself should seal nicely. If there are gouges in the timing cover, the sealant will fill in those areas to prevent leaks.
If you do decide to put some sealant on the gasket, just make sure you use a THIN layer of sealant and let it cure for the recommended amount of time before putting coolant back into the system.
I just installed a new water pump on my 22R two weeks ago with just a new gasket I have no leaks. I was just like you trying to decide on what to do.
I went over and looked at what the procedure is in the Factory Toyota Repair Manual and it makes no mention of putting sealants on the gasket. All it says for installing the water pump is: "Install the water pump and a new gasket with six bolts and three nuts".
Because the manual made no mention here about sealant (but does for other sealing applications), I took that as the gasket was meant to be installed just by itself. When I removed my original water pump, it was just a gasket from the factory.

Crank pulley Help
Hi Guys
So I was installing the crank pulley and was preparing to put the rope in number 1 cylinder .
Before I did that I thought I would snug her up.
I keep snugging her up and the motor never turned over so I was able to torque to 116 foot pounds with out the rope in number 1 cylinder to keep the motor from turning over.
I have an automatic.
Is this right ?
Is it because I am turning the crank in the opposite direction ?
