Need help with clicking in brakes

I recently put new rotors and pads on my '88 4x4. Everything was good for the first day but then the drivers side developed a clicking sound. It sounds like the pad is slapping the rotor or catching on a high spot. Ive seen shims(or something like) come with new pads before is this what they are for? To take up any clearance and stop slapping? The sound goes away instantly when I touch the brakes, dont have to push just touch and close the gap between the pad and rotor. Thanks for any advice

Shims do help take up slack. But, do you have the anti-rattle springs on?

Was the rotor 'trued' or 'turned'? It definitely sounds like something warped.
I've never bought pads for my toy's that came with shims.
Is it possible that the factory anti-rattle clips aren't installed properly?

If the anti rattle springs are the ones at the top of the caliper and run around the pad retaining pins and the pads then yes. Replace maybe? Are there other springs I am missing? I would not be surprised, the truck was very poorly maintained before I bought it.

My '88 has springs on both ends of the caliper- top and bottom.
I'm not saying your's should have them as well though.

No, I didnt have the rotors turned. They were new, should I have new rotors turned also? My dad told me to, but everyone else I asked told me not too, but they were mostly motorcycle mechanics. Looks like I am missing two springs then.

New rotors should be true, but there's no guarantee they are free from warping other than to have them trued/turned. But that shouldn't cause a clicking noise since the calipers float.
Sounds more like something on the caliper isn't installed correctly.

My '86 has on each brake assembly one rattle spring that loops over the top slider pin and secures in the pad backing plate, and one retainer spring that either end inserts into a tiny hole at the end of each slider pin. The free end of each pin has a retaining flange. So, if you have the rattle spring....good... and, if you have a hole on both ends of the pin, then you need two retainers. But, the retainers won't stop the clicking. You probably just need shims. Calipers pistons can't always be made exact on their pad clearances.

Either the anti-rattle springs, or the clips are making the noise, bend em, twist em or something so they knock it off.
