Need HEAVY DUTY Clutch
87 4Runner 22RE 4WD 5Speed
19 yr old son keeps this vehicle in the mud
Need HEAVY DUTY Clutch... I used heavy duty clutch from one of big box parts house 2 yrs ago and need replacing again now. Any ideas on what will stand up better under this kind of use.???

A tractor trailer clutch?...
Marlin Crawler makes a heavy duty clutch that a lot of people like.....myself included. Might check with WabFab, also.
How big are the tires on that truck? Terribly oversized tires on a stock powertrain doesn't help much with clutch longevity.....even for a modest driver.
On that note, regearing the axles would help a lot.

Well, the stock gears and 34/35" tires aren't helping matters. Just ask those who've run their vehicles thay way. There's a few threads running around mentioning this.
The Taco rear end won't do any better (e-locker will make no difference, either) unless the ratio is lower than the 4.10's that are already in it. I believe many would agree he'd need atleast 4.88's or even lower....5.29's. The latter would have to be aftermarket sourced, though....unless he found some used. This would not only help the clutch, but give the truck better bottom end and fuel economy. Like I said, there's a number of threads on the matter.

I will agree with Thook. Re-gear the differentials to 5.29's along with a Marlin crawler HD clutch (or even super HD). You will notice a big difference.

I agree too...didnt look at the pics before...those tires are HUGE for stock gears..no clutch will hold up for long...
He needs smaller tires or lower diff gears...no way around it

thats what I have...works great with 36" tires as well....
I burnt up a stock clutch on some rocky trails then went to the centerforce II......
works too good almost....my 300,000 mile tranny didnt agree with it though..
thats a tooth from my reverse gear

I've yet to break any gears in the tranny in this rig but i have trashed one a few years back, that was a expensive rebuild. But my 4 speed seems to be a little tougher than my 5 speed was, however that could be burned out brain cells.

I run a set of 35x12.5's and before I went to the 5.29's and heavy MARLIN clutch with 4.10's even on the road only it was a nightmare.
After regearing and heavy duty clutch it run's like a new truck can't beat the combo and you need it at the very least to get the most out of the truck and expect it to keep the drivetrain happy.
