Name This Noise!
I just finished a headgasket...
Started up fine, warmed it up, replaced all the fluids and readjusted the valves.
it was super noisy after that so I pulled the valvecover again and rechecked the valve adjustment. I have it set so that the feeler gauge starts getting tough to wiggle.....
now its making this noise.

youll hear in the video that there is a weird sound that comes and goes....
also how does the valvetrain noise sound to you guys?...this is my first 22r and I dont know anyone with one either lol
the noise comes and goes...for instance it starts at 0:38 and quits at 0:48....
..click on the question mark ^

I was meaning that its my first 22r series engine...its making much more noise than my 4agze and 4age...but they dont have rocker arms n stuff soo...

The 22r series are ALWAYS gonna have a little valve chatter its just the nature of them. Sounds like valve shatter but possibly timing chain related? The timing chain will make a similar sound.
When i used to have a 22r i just adjusted them one gauge smaller than spec never gave me any noise or troubles

To me it almost sounds normal. Maybe just a tad louder. I would re-adjust the valve lash. Using 1 number lower as previously mentioned isn't gonna cause an issue.
Did you do the timing chain with or without the head on?

What do you mean "do"? I replaced the headgasket and the chain/guides/tensioner......

You did readjust the valves after the new headgasket right? If not, you should. Also did you use new adjuster nuts and screws on the valves? If not it's a good idea to do that when doing the headgasket as they are usually worn pretty good, especially if the P.O. was not doing regularly scheduled adjustments. If I recall correctly every 30,000 miles according to the FSM.

kinda sounds like you have the wrong bolt in the timing chain cover, the one that gets rtv, if its to long the timing chain will rub when its coming back down to idle, making the noise yours does. of course my 2 ex wives would tell you im full of ˟˟˟˟ too, jmo

They are almost all different lengths. One one bolt is "precoated" from the factory and it supposed to be recoated with rtv.

the one in question is the top most oil pump bolt. Marked in red in the below photo.

It should not protrude through the back of the cover, otherwise it will hinder the movement of the chain tensioner.

what about the oil pump section?
Pull that top bolt out (might wanna tape the hole otherwise it will spew oil) and see if the noise goes away. I don't remember off hand how long that bolt is supposed to be.

ahhh...found it in the oilpump section. I will have to check with my friend who actually bolted the oil pump on. Im pretty sure he didnt put rtv on it so I will have to keep an eye out for seeping oil regardless.
It almost seems like the noise is going away...My problem is Ive never really heard another 22r series engine before to compare!
