my truck locks when in 4wd hi and turning help!!

hey guys im new to the forums aswell as to the lifted toyota life i have only had all original toyotas lol. well here is the problem i went and bought a already lifted 4runner with the 3.slow (which blew yesterday 2days after i bought it) the truck has fj80 springs and 15'' bj spacer and bars torqued and no sway bars. he said it has original 4.88 gears and spartan locker. if i put it in 4hi and turn either to the left or right almost full way the truck locks up and goes no where. does any one know why this could be happening? ill appreciate the help. cheers!!!

Welcome from Alabama
Are you trying to turn on pavement while in 4wd?

thanks!!
Well its hard gravel i thought the same when i did it at the parking lot but i tried it on the gravel and same thing happened. I thought that was only a jeep thing that they get stuck when you turn. It has to be almost full turned though.

What exactly do you think is getting stuck? The truck is unable to move forward while having the steering wheel turned? Are you sure it isn't just normal 4wd operation?

well the truck in 2wd is fine you can turn the whole way and it goes foward but if i put it in 4wd it gets stuck if i turn a little before the whole way and it wont move. I can feel the whole car shift when and it gets stuck and if i steer straight it goes again.

Just to clarify you have driven 4wd vehicles before correct?

Binding up the 4 wheel drive. You shouldn't try to turn sharp in 4wd unless your on very loose terrain like beach sand loose

Yeah, what you're describing sounds pretty normal, especially for one locked in the rear. You would notice it a lot less in loose gravel, snow, or mud. The 4wd system isn't meant to be driven on high traction surfaces.

Well yea i have driven 4wd cars all my life never with a locker and my cherokee even with a 6'' lift and no sway bars wouldnt do it so i was concer but looking at it from your point of view sounds normal ill have to go out and test it on loose ground. Thats after i find a 3.slow to swap in for now..

Id suggest researching a 3.4 swap before spending a dime on a 3.0. Your rear locker shouldn't make the truck bind in 4wd anymore than a open diff truck would. Mine doesn't unless I get on it and the whole back end spins around

I just purchased the truck on sunday so i want to put in the 3.0 just to move around while i collect and research what has to be done to do a 3.4 swap. I have done swap before but that was to vw/audi but the only swap i did to a yota was a 22r into my '79 pickup that i was restoring lol.

Keep your eye out for a 3.4 though. I swapped mine for about the cost of rebuilding the 3.0. Some have swapped and came out even after selling things they didn't need. Hardest part was the exhaust crossover, which I took the entire engine to a exhaust shop and had the stock one flipped around.

Sounds like the CV joints are binding, 1.5" BJ spacers and torsion bars torque high might be too much.
