My truck just died
My little '93 4wd pickup I bought a couple months back just died. I have had it since November but have not driven it much until lately. I bought it because I was getting laid off at the end of December and needed something to replace my company truck. I really just started drving it a couple of weeks ago (only put about 1K miles on it) and it seemed like it was going to be reliable despite the 185K miles (22RE). The motor did have some knocking but my hopes it would make it for another 30K miles. Today while driving my little girl back from the doctor's office I heard a new knocking sound that was louder and started to get concerned. I was hoping to make it another 10 miles to home and then I started loosing power quickly. I coasted into a parking lot a few hundred yards away and now it it dead. though I have electrical power the motor won't do anything when I turn the key. Oil on the dipstick looks good, no leaks. I feel it is something catostrophic.

I have a quarter that says it has pieces from a timing chain rail sucked up to and blocking the oil pick up tube. Which blocked all oil flow and starved the engine.
Knock sound = bad = pull over NOW = fixable engine possibly for cheep.
Knock sound = eh its got 30K = keep driving = hey look a banana = very broken, very expensive, poor poor Toyota engine.

hmmm sounds like when I tore up my #4 rod bearing. Didn't care, planned on rebuilding engine anyway, popped the clutch a few times to keep er running 1 mile to get off highway.
Did you notice if the oil light came on a short time after it started knocking?

Hard to say where this knock was coming from. If I had to say it was coming from the top on the driver's side (of course I was sitting on the driver's side). It was only doing this new knock early in the rpm curve like when you were shifting gears (for the most part). It was not doing it at idle. At higher RPM (3000'ish) the new knock wasn't as noticable. Of course the old 3000 and above knocks I had could have been drowning out the sound a bit.
Got the truck home and its in the driveway. I will round up some help and push it in the garage tomorrow where it will sit until I can figure out how to come up with some cash.
