My Truck has turned into a Lada! (Won't start!)
O Great and Wise gurus of everything Toyota, I humbly ask for help of your vast knowledge and wisdom…
My 91 pickup (22RE 5spd) is causing me woe of epic proportion, previously unseen since the days of the Lada. It seems the beastoid likes to start and die a horrible terible death 15 seconds later.
- If I jump the fuel pump test connector I can hear the pump running in the tank and I can hear fuel circulating throught the fuel rail under the hood (turned out to be leaking injector seal). If I leave the fuel pump test connector in, the truck will start and continue to run but it runs choppy (sounds like a miss). It will suddenly recover and run fine for a bit but then run choppy again. This cycle will repeat itself. When the truck starts to miss I notice the tach will jump and the “Check engine” will light will come on but the light is very dim. Once it returns to normal running the dim engine light will go out and the tach will become smooth.
- I also notice that there are two distinct “click” ing sounds under the hood about 1.5 seconds appart (unable to locate). Once the clicking happens the engine will idle properly for a bit but then start to miss. The two clicks will happen again and the cycle will repeat itself.
- The computer reports no codes when jumped and continuously blinks telling me everything is fine
- It appears to me that the
o Fuel pump is good
o Fuel filter is good
o Computer is good
- If I remove the Fuel pump test jumper the engine will start and die in about 15-20 seconds. When it dies it will cough and sputter a bit and then die. I can keep it running if I push the clutch in and turn the key to engage the starter. Seems to run fine if I’ve got the clutch in and starter engaged. (I’m guessing there’s a separate start circuit or something)
I’ve replaced the relays under the hood and in the passenger kick panel
My truck is dead on the street and I'm out of ideas. Help!

Wow sounds wierd. I would check your AFM. Make sure the you can move the flap with you fingers. Then I would check your distributor pick up. It may be going causing one injector not to fire, then it fires for a bit then goes out again. That may be your tick every 1.5 sec.
I would also get it running in the dark and look for arking around the distributor and coil.

So I FINALLY got the issues ironed out with my rig.
Turned out it had 3 issues:
1) Wire driving the electric fuel pump had a break in it. Sometimes it would run, sometimes it wouldn't
2) Looks like to fuel filter was partly plugged.
3) The EGR valve was stuck open. Didn't help the situation.
Now it runs proper except for some reason I have to short the fuel pump connector in the diagnostic box under the hood
Wow, What I'd give for a 2BBL...
Good think I've got another daily driver
