$500 bucks makes me jealous, that's a freakin' steal! too bad about the auto tranny, I push manuals, period. If you are serious about a conversion to a 5 speed, keep digging, there are threads on here to help you out. Good deal though, regardless...

like anything else, the ECU /wiring has some of the biggest hurdles for most folks.

if you do not have experience, the right tools and a way to clean the parts and case, it would probley be better to not rebuild the trans your self. it could be more of a headache than it is worth.

Great buy for 500 bucks, even if you part it out.

junkyard will still be your best bet.

i don't know anything about your mechanical skills...but i bet you not only DON'T have the right tools for the job..but you probably wouldn't be able to get the job done right.

sounds kinda degrading, but it's the truth lol..the insides of an auto tranny is one place an average guy should never venture!

i think your model is the A340H? maybe? lol

you are right, camo31. I dont have the tools or too much experience as a mechanic; however, if you dont take a risk, you will never know. Im a risk taker, the wrong thing that can happend is that it wouldnt work....jajaja....

update; I just found some time to work on this 4runner. I am starting to taking the transmission off. I empty the oil out of the tranny but man, the oil was all black. I was starting to think the PO put motor oil instead of tranny fluid. but the oil was more watering than motor oil. It did smell burn, too. also it seem like the tranny was leaking from everywhere, specially on the end. as soon I took the rear driveshaft, oil came out from it.. well here are some pics.

Take the working solenoids off yours, norcal, and put them on Guardian_Saint's, and you'll have a working transmission.

It IS possible to rebuild automatic transmissions by yourself, but it requires a lot of knowledge and documentation that isn't readily available from forums like this, partly because almost no DIYers rebuild their own automatic transmissions, and anyway on this site, the majority of folks don't even like them.

If one were to figure out how to fix auto transmissions, I'd expect he'd be motivated by passion, which there is precious little of for those made by Toyota, or else career goals, but fixing a busted transmission to sell is not exactly a career.

where there's a will there's a way... if you do enough homework and get some tools you can accomplish anything... a couple years ago, I did little else but change my own oil and grease the chassis; a supercharged taco and a 4runner project crawler later and now I have done sooooo much more. Just picked up a SFA for my runner today!! thanks yotatech...

I would never touch an auto tranny myself but kudos to you if you can do it! worse case scenario, you wind up taking it to a transmission shop which is where you would've started to begin with so who knows...

besides, you got a steal on this thing anyway! My buddy literally just bought a 94 runner for $2100 with an auto but found out a day later that the heads were cracked! pretty sick feeling for him, felt sorry for him but I think he can get most of his money back. He pushes a new jeep rubicon with about $12 k in aftermarket goodies on 35's so he's already got his rockcrawler but crappy deal on his runner.

good luck on your tranny!!

go to techinfo.toyota.com and for $15 you can have access to all the files (most in pdf format) that we have as techs. This should give you any/all information you need.
