Unhappy My 4runner started making a bad noise!

Hi,

93' 4runner
3.0 V6 Auto 4X4

The other day my 4runner started making another noise. It hard to duplicate but it seems to happen when slowly coasting such as stopping at a stop light or coasting in a parking lot. However the sound stops when I come to a complete stop or when I accelerate.

The noise: It is a sound that reminds me of baseball cards in bike spokes but really fast. My GF thinks it sounds like something vibrating. Its loud enough to hear over the ticking and concerns me.

It seems like it is coming from somewhere between the timing cover and the distributor.

Has anyone heard this sound before? what do you think it could be before I start tearing it apart.

Thanks

Any Ideas? It almost sounds like the fan is rubbing on the shroud but the sound is not coming from by the fan....

Could a bad injector make that sound?

Sort of reminds me of the sound my pickup (22re) made when the timing chain was slapping the side of the cover. I also thought it was the fan but it wasn't.

Other than to say check your timing chain & cover, I have no ideas.

A single injector fires once every second revolution. Thus if you're 1000 rpm, as you're coasting to a stop, then the noisy injector is firing 500 times.

Does that sound like the noise you're hearing.

The other day I listened to it with my scope and it was not making any weird noises. However I was in park idling. It seems to make the noise when I am coasting.

It could be... that would be around 8 times a second. It only seems to be when I am coasting. I don't know much about injectors, could one cause this noise?

Kaydon: I have the v6 but I did change the timing belt about 1200 miles ago.

What about a valve since its coming from that area?

Is it under the hood or under the dash? Maybe speedo cable.

Good idea, It seems to be under the hood. I can narrow it down to the drivers side of the engine around the distributor-valve cover-injectors area....

It almost reminds me of a engine brake on a semi but not as loud. Just a Burmrrurrurmurururm!!! when I am coasting.
