Question my 4runner was born in Area 51

it's been awhile since I posted but no work as been done on the runner for months...we bought 3 bikes this summer and we have been working on these...LOL

now, after FINALLY getting the hubby to replace the shifter bezel, which I had for months, look what we found when removing the old cracked one...

was my 4runner born in area 51 or WHAT??LOL

intro thread to my runner is here, maybe there is an explanation?

Is there a hole under that? Are the trans shifter boot and xfer case shifter boot still one solid piece?

The "3rd" boot isn't an extra(spare possibly?). It's either for a transmission shifter or a transfer case shifter(hard to tell from the pic...looks like the transmission shifter is missing the "upper" boot, which is what that one would be). Why it's been pulled off and stuck back under there is anybody's guess. Same goes for why there's a hole underneath it. Rusted out floorboard?

EDIT: Happened to be listening to Megadeth's Hanger 18() while I was reading/replying to this thread. Strange coincidence?

I think the 2 boots (away from the front) were the original ones, and the front one was the add on?

I know this truck has been modded right after purchase, look at the pics on the original thread:

yes sir, totally the horn button on the shifter!! LOL

at first I was thiking it needed to come off ASAP, but now that it's gone, until we figure out what to do with the 3 boots, it's off and I miss it

I think it is the BEST location for the horn, honestly!

and I just went outside, and no, I can't see the earth under it...my bad, seems like a metal "plate" and it's dirty so I thought I was seeing the dirt in our gravel parking...my bad

Could it possibly been an auto modified into a standard?

Right. Now that it's been mention, that doesn't really look like the factory placement for the shifters. That tranny shifter certainly isn't factory, either.

The shifter boot does have two layers, could this be the bottom layer of the trans boot just flipped around and not installed properly?

well...here's the pic of the sticker...and I said I was able to see the ground/earth and then I said I couldn't...well, It's kinda both...lol
if we don't move the boot, we can only see a metal plate but if we move it slightly, we can def. see the ground...so I had the hubby holding it while taking a pic:

I have the opposite on my pickup, went from a forward shift tcase to a top shift. Just about a 4" difference. That or this was wabbit's runner first.

Wow, I've never seen any conversions done to a 4runner. Very cool!

Looks like that company started up in Sept 85 in TN and went inactive Aug 91. I wonder how many others they did like that?
