Not a good choice financially.
You financed. So by the time your done paying for that car, your looking at paying over 10K for it...maybe close to 12k depending on your credit. Not to mention, 8K is a lot of money for that car. Well..to each there own. Good luck on with your chevy.

Please, don't try and convince us all about Cavalier quality. Go to a junkyard...they are littered with new Cavaliers. The Cobalts are no better either. My friend has one with 16,000 miles and it's falling apart. Hubcap rattles, key won't come out of the ignition unless you slam it into park, turn signals don't shut off, some pieces just randomly fell from underneath the dash.
Sure, your gonna get some here and there that last, but that's in NO way common, I mean they pump these things out by the thousands and will finance one to anyone nearly.
People that drive American and own American don't expect much beyond 100,000 for a reason. I heard a guy in 7-11 preaching about how wonderful his Chevy truck was. He was going on and on, oh it's got 123,000 and runs strong, motors great, blah blah blah. Then he's like, yeah I love American, I've got a ton of miles and the only thing I've ever had to replace was the tranny....two times. Other than that, typical maintenance and repairs. He's like, I'll never get rid of it.
I'm thinkin...is this guy on crack? There was a study I remembered reading comparing Toyota 4runners to Ford Explorers. It revealed that on average, a 3 year Explorer experiences the same amount of mechanical failures (based on repair costs) as not a 5 year old 4runner, not an 8 year old one, not a 12 year old one, but a 15 year old 4runner!!!! It's objective was to reveal, that all these "initial quality" awards the american makers win are certainly not an indicator of long term quality.
Simply look at the resale values....there's a reason Honda's and Toyota's book so high over the years, and why you can buy 3 year old Cobalts and other used but still new chevy's for next to nothing.

It's all about how you maintain it. My first car when I was 16 was a new 1999 Cavalier Z24 (2.4L LD9 engine). I had it until 95,000 miles and I never had to take it in for service except for when I went in the ditch in the snow and blew out the power steering trying to free the front wheels (shhh! they fixed it under warranty). It was a great car for what it was. I learned how to change oil, brake pads, fuel filter, coolant, auto tranny fluid and rotate tires on that car.

got a hospital (tri health) near me with a whole fleet of cavaliers (8) that they use for lab delivery. they have all different kinds of drivers. and they trade them in when they hit 300,000 miles. the mechanic is a friend of mine. other than routine stuff (brakes, wheel bearings, radiators etc) they have put one timing chain in one and two had the head gasket go. but the 8 cavaliers get all the maintenance including trans services. its all perception. one mans junk is another mans treasure. i love toyotas also! but i do not stereotype other manufactures. mike

Funny how Shivy has an over 200K club... In Toyotas we call that the break-in period. Chevy's are disposable gtarbage.
Coed you are a jizz. It's been a done for a month now. I was just hovering on the boards and thought I'd thank everyone for the wisdom over the years. I really thought YotaTech was better than this. Bunch of internet know it alls. I see the same crap all the time on glocktalk.com. GLOCK are god's gift to firearms blah blah blah. You people who posted are like that guy who brings up politics when you're just relaxin drinking a few beers talking about the football game. I didn't ask for an opinion or any reply honestly. I was just THANKING PEOPLE. Thanks Blueyot as you're the only one who really even had a decent post. I was pretty much expecting "Yeah I wouldn't of done that but good luck and hope you get your new yota soon" not "you have no street smarts and got totally ripped off and your new car is a piece of S*it" That is ridiculous to even say I got completely ripped off. This is my last post about this, I bet a few more people still won't get the point though.

kpaxfaq,
Where is the 4Runner?
I want to buy it.
Tell me what equipment it has on it, and if it has a gray interior with power windows and power door locks and power mirrors, I will drive to Erie on Friday and buy it! Please Reply! And if you have the dealer phone number, I would appreciate it!
Thanks,
Clint

I'm a Toyota believer and think they are of higher quality but they aren't God's gifts to vehicles. I knew what I was getting with my car. Complete record of oil changes and nothing else cause theres only 25,000 miles. I could go buy a 96' Camery and have no idea if it was maintained well or anything! I'm sorry but my 4-runner was a good vehicle but it had it's share of issues like any other car over the 10 years my family owned it and it was well maintained. It just an arrogant attitude coming from some toyota owners on here in my opinion acting like just cause toyota is stamped on the side you'll "just have to change the oil". Thats absurd and you know it. My mom is a CPA and recommended that I finance it on PURPOSE to build credit because I have none. I pay 180/month for 3 years and I don't have to worry about ANYTHING. My engine could blow up and engulf in flames and I would have a loaner car until it was fixed. I wouldn't pay a dime. 180/month for 3 years is worth that kind of piece of mind instead of buying some unknown 10 year old camery having a problem a couple months down the road and be staring a 1000 dollar repair bill in the face with no loaner.

the thing that gets me is... cavalier?
i mean, a cavalier? seriously? is it just me or is a cavalier one of the ugliest cars on the road? seems every young person drives a sunfire or a cavalier and they're both so damned ugly.
sorry, but i mean, really.

kpaxfaq I understand you point of view on the decision you've made.
Your grandpa was helping you out, you don't actually have $6,000 in your pocket waiting to be spent towards a vehicle and so you couldn't just go rebuild you runner. I know most of us would choose a different make then Chevy but what's done is done. Because you sold your toyota does that mean you won't be hanging around Yotatech anymore? I know if I had to sell my truck and ride a 12 speed everywhere I would still hang out on yotatech.
No need to push him away guys. We're all Toyota lovers around here!
Good luck with your new ride.

Hallman Chevy at 21st and State st. It is tan with tan cloth interior. CD player. AC still works lol. The body and underbody are screwed. No muffler. Motor had headgasket done at 150k. CV boots have been torn for awhile so the front cv joints need replaced. The rear axel seal is leaking so that needs fixed along with the rear drum brakes then. Threw some cheap front brake pads on it to get me through a couple months till i got rid of it. Thats all I can think of thats wrong with it to my knowledge. Oh yeah, the starter needs new contacts too. Once in awhile you'll walk out and it won't start so I just had a hammer in the truck with me. A few taps and it would start right up. I'm all for it finding another home, I'm just a parent who can't properly take care of their baby anymore lol. Hopefully its still there.
174,000 on the clock

Of course I'm still going to hang out on yotatech! Believe me I fought my parents on the chevy issue but when family is willing to hand over 3 grand to you towards a car that they think you should be getting..., and you're in between a rock and a hard place because you're so busy you need a reliable newer vehicle (my toyota kept driving but was really starting to fall apart), and I have a warrenty the entire time im paying payments on the chevy, I just couldnt say no. I do so much driving that the sheer money I save on gas will easily be close to a car payment! Believe me not my first choice. I'm a truck guy.
I graduate in less than a year and look at it like this vehicle is my hump car lol. If this car turns out to be very good, then hell I'll hang onto it and buy myself an older yota to toy around with. If I decide I'm ready to get rid of the car, then I'll see it for a few grand and put it towards a nice new yota. Believe me its not my first choice but I don't think its a retarded decision like so many people said. I love yotatech and yes I will be sticking around and hovering the forums to offer any help/experiences I have from my 4-runner because I love them!
Sorry I flipped out and I'm sure some of the harsh responses were from not knowing the whole situation either because I didn't really lay it out there clearly.

Just to let you know, don't EVER use KBB to determine the real world value of a vehicle. It's just a tool used by dealerships to inflate their retail prices. I've probably bought and sold 15 cars/trucks and bikes, both private and retail. All the banks/credit unions I've seen never use KBB.

Only one problem with Edmunds...
My truck, according to them, is worth only $1,200.
Yeah, and I am skinny enough to drive a regular cab...
V6 Xtra Cab Auto in good condition (truly is) with A/C, Cruise, sliding rear window, split bench, CD player, and plastic bedliner, is only worth 1200 bucks? I think not...

I'm sure your car will be fine to get you through school. Was I was going to undergad a couple of my friends had them, but at that time they were basically disposable cars (much like my old Ford Tempo)...but that was the older gen. Cavaliers.
