My 1st complete rebuild on my own, at 235,000 miles. Not as hard as you might think

Greetings to one and all. I just finished with my 1st complete engine rebuild, my 91 toy, 2 wheel drive at 235,000 miles.
I had the head re surfaced at 136,000 miles due to a blown head gasket about 6yrs ago when I1st bought it .The reason for
this complete rebuild was a slight leak from the head which was not and issue because it kept on ticking. Literary
ticking, a noise, or should I say, a song that I sang daily that I could not get out of my head which I got accustomed to over 4yrs. And because it had never left me
stranded, I decided to invest my Personal time and energy into it .The shop wanted $1500,meaning resurfacing of
the cylinder head, the rocker arm assembly, the engine block, and they also recommended the timing chain cover. The machinist cost me a
total of $550, cash, money. My only guide was the Haynes manual, which was more than sufficient, very self explanatory. No youtube was
necessary ,which could be a plus of course, especially if you are doing such a big project for the 1st time. Because I have been on Yotatech forum for quite some time now, and you guys have been the force
that have kept my 22re running strong, I decided to do the build on my own. It is not hard, once you know how to read and then comprehend.
I was told by the Machinist that bigger piston was needed due to wear and tear. More power means gas, sad to say, the outcome which
I am not too happy about. I must say though, I never thought my 91 could sound so, how should I say this, "Beautiful"!!!, not to mention quiet, and power.
It was well worth the time and effort. The ticking song was a broken timing guide. I was debating between plastic or metal guide?? I went plastic. Why plastic? well,
when I went on the yota sight, there was still a debate on that issue, since sooo long. I had one issue after my 1st initial start. The engine popped every time
I accelerated, not from the tail pipe but from the intake," air filter". REASON is, when I installed the distributor, I did not install it at "TDC", top dead
center on the compression stroke, it was pointing on #4 instead of #1 . I then removed the distributor, set it at tdc, making sure it was point at the #1, re installed the distributor and, well, that was it. Running strong again, unlike never before.
I hope this post helped someone, thanks. Please take your time reading and understanding ,re reading multiple time if needed. It took me 4 days to complete.
The best part of all this was not too much the savings, but to say I did it on my own, and I know understand how the 22RE TICS LOL. Thanks again.
