went muddin, got mud in my alternator, and some in my airbox, toasted my alternator, need a new filter. anyways, heres my deal. i want to know a good way to avoid such things happening. i know for the intake a snorkel is a good idea to keep water and such out, but how do you protect the alternator in particular?

 

I wonder if you could make a shield out of sheet metal that wrapped around the bottom of the alternator but still left enough room for the air to get by to cool it. you could make it so it bolts to the alternator mounts so that it could be used on another alternator if it blew out again.

 

Simple - don't go in mud that deep. Or at least not at a speed where it going to get splashed and forced into the alternator.

I just avoid mud if at all possible. Sounds like your radiator fan was throwing the mud/water up into the engine bay. If that's the case you can get an electric fan and switch it off before going through deep water.

 

Dont haull a$$ into a mud pit. Get to the beginning of it then once your almost in gas it.

 

that makes more sense than my approach hahaha. Yeah just slow down.

 

luckily it was covered under the lexus dealership warrenty, and they fixed it up. i would just build something that would cover up the underbody, but my concern is airflow.

takes forever to clean off, and still cant ever get it "ALL" off...

 

who slows down? the whole point is to nail the pit and throw mud everywhere. lol. my wheels dont stick out of the wheel well, so i dont throw any mud up. if i want mud all over the place ive gotta hit the pit.

simple answer then, dont take your prerunner with street tires into a mud pit and destroy your alternator. Or always have a buddy ready to pull u out

 

did i say anything about getting stuck? i can go thru stuff just fine. im not looking for people to try and put down my truck, im trying to find an answer to a question of how to keep mud out of the alternator. before you start making assumptions and throwing down on what i do, try to at least say something useful.

yeah, hate when that happens... ive fried 3 alternators doin that in san diego... proctor valley, for anyone out that way.. when it rains, it gets all muddy. ive tried different things, but nothing seems to work. ill look around to get some ideas, then repost.

 

i HATE mud.

I went camping last month and to pull out a bunch of people in cars because they got stuck in mud.

I tried to play it off like my truck wasn't very good in the mud untill some guy pointed out i have a locker...

didnt break anything but my truck was flithy and i spent 2 hours cleaning it. My frame is so black and pretty i dont want to get it muddy (yes thats right i wash my frame)

 

lol. its cool. i always spray out all the mud and grass and whatever out from my underbody.

How did he know you had a locker? Do you have a decal or something?

 

Back when I thought i had to hit holes hard, nearly lost my motor that day.



That day i drove up a creek that was much deeper than that hole i was stuck in. No problems at all because i slowed down and let my bumper start a wave in front of my truck that saved me.

 

i would get an electric fan like mtgoat said. thats the best help really. as for you airbox i would invest in a snorkle. it sounds like you love mud alot so if your gonna play in it this would be your best bet for saftey. cant put you down for that however i am in the same boat that mud destroys trucks (mine included) you cant really protect your alt from the elements unless you can fab somekind of shield. not to sure but make sure all your electronic connectors has dialectic grease to help from corrosion and moisture (aspecialy your plugs)

 

Been muddin plenty of times, trick is to go in slow.

 

dont hit the mudholes fast, you dont get the big splash into your alt and stuff, its something im trying to learn how to do after just replacing my alt from mud damage. and for those of you just saying how much you hate mud just remember that some of us do. but anyways, would it be a bad idea to cover the alt in plastic? that would keep the mud out but are there any problems to doing this?
