That “poor sod” paid you money, when you get into the real world that attitude is going to bite you fast.
It is a cheap and viable option for 4runner and Tacoma owners: paying for a used hitch may be more cost effective compared to having the mounting system properly fabricated. I’ve run two different rear bumpers and can attest to the strength of the factory hitch. If you ask for advice, we may just give it to you…

That thickness looks closer to 5/16" or 3/8ths....but it's been a long day.
I'd go at least a hair thicker than a quarter, but I always tend to think things need to be over built. Technically I probably doesn't need to be much thicker than the frame I suppose. I'd still over build it on my own rig.

I want to keep weight down and I don't think the plasma cutter will cut that (but it might, dunno). The MIG I use can't do much over 3/16" I think. Whether that means that I only get the strength of a 3/16" weld on any thickness material or otherwise, I don't know.

Apparently, you cannot just buy the MC brackets. I may keep pursuing that avenue though. Those MC brackets (above) look close to 1/2", can anyone attest to that?
Back to this style of mount, the rear section of frame is nowhere near flat, there's the plate extending of the rear tie-downs, and some piece for between where the body mount mounts to the frame. Does the bumper mounting plate just go over all that?
