motor swaps??
hey guys
well i think its about time to either rebuild the 22RE or do a swap. I need yalls help on helping me decide which. If i do get the 22RE rebuilt i want to have some work done to it like having it bored or stroked. So in yalls mind which would be the better way to go, im trying to compare the difficulty of each and the price differences. Also if i did do a full swap, what we be the best motor to run with? im thinking the 3.4, or should i look into something bigger, like a 305 chevy? or possibly a 1.8 liter turbo diesel out of a VW jetta??
thanks for any help yall

IMO, the 22R, while being a very reliable motor, is ancient design wise. For the same amount of money, you could rebuild a newer motor, and make much more power.
If you want a simple swap, a newer 2RZ or 3RZ are almost bolt-in mechanically.
A 305 would bea lot more power, but it's also going to start breaking stuff. How far do you want to go with this truck, and what are your goals?

well heres the deal. i have narrowed it down to either rebuilding the current motor, or swapping in a 3.4. So my question to yall is wich one would be cheaper?? and by the way if i keep the 22RE it will get bored.
thanks for all the help.

chevy 4.3 is cheaper and more powerful than a 3.4. My vote is the 4.3. great motor tons of aftermarket and reliable. Just another option and a very popular swap. Oh and no 305's

funny you should mention...
At the bottom of my sig is the two links for motor swaps and custom fab stuff. On on a 3.4 swap and the other on my current 4.3 build
Theres also an entire section devoted to swaps here on YT under forums

Cost and time is undetermained as I dont want to look back at my receipts
Really cant say anymore than a ball park range of about 2-5k all really depends what you want out of it, were you get the motor, parts, time, skills... the list goes on. Check out AA (advance adapters) NW offroad and downey offroad. All have some good info and kits to look at.

Not to burst your bubble, but you wont be able to keep up when your broken down on the trail with the rest of the domestics
For $300 its hard to pass up a 4.3 especially the newer vortec motors. They arent to bad as long as you keep up on the maintance. My parents had a 96 safari with the 4.3 and it has some pick up. For some reason thought the new 4.3 did have the pick up like me parents. If I was on a tight budget I would have put in a 4.3 or a very mild 350 but I wasnt so I did the 3.4. I spend a little more for reliability since i drive my truck to the trails.

i bought my runner thinking, sweet v8 but the 305 two bolt main was not cut out to run a gear drive on a stock top end.
my 350 4 bolt main with truck heads and extreme 4x4 cam is working out great. i got about 1100 miles on her now. she broke in nicely.

Once thought about a 350 and will most likely have one, one day. If I build another rig someday definetly will have a V8. I have a 350 in my DD and love it

My little bro has an '88 GMC half-ton with a 350...I want to rebuild it one day...Maybe put a solid axle in front, different trans...I bet the rebuild kits are cheap as heck too.
If you want to go the hard/expensive route, you could swap in a 1UZ like I'm planning...
BTW, the 2LT-E diesel bolts in...Fairly simple wiring too.
Check it out.
