Motor swap 90 runner to 88 runner
Okay I have a 88 4Runner that was converted to carb .. The motor recently went.. I have a donor 4Runner 1990 complete ... What's the best route to go
Swap in everything from the 1990 and convert back to EFI .. Or carb the 1990 EFI motor
How hard would it be if I have all the wiring from the 1990

The wiring is very different between those two body styles and years. 1988 was a sort of weird year which doesn't match up with any other years. Then you are switching from 1st gen to 2nd gen which changes a bunch of stuff too. It would be far easier to just pull the long block from the 90 and drop it in the 88 so long as you were happy with the carburetor setup before the engine went out on you. The engines are the same internally but intake and exhaust stuff changes every few years so just swap the valve cover down to the oil pan and you'll be set.

Ya you got a bastard there. Fuel pump still in the tank? Cor relay and stuff still there from the carb conversion? It all depmeds on what is left from the original FI 88. If most of the stuff is still there I would pull the engine and harness from the 90' alnong with the ignitor. Mount the ecu, plug it in and see where you are. The body wiring did not change much, just all the injecto plugs and engine wiring which you are taking with the engine anyway. Thats what I would do. You may have to screw around with the dash wiring harness that plugs into the ecu. 90 was still a wierd year as well. 92 everyhing was sorted out.

i think that the engine wiring harness plugs directly into the ecu? that should all be pretty straightforward to swap over, it should go out the firewall right to the engine... but there is also another harness under the dash, does it plug into the ecu? i can't remember.
the last time the forum was faced with a carb conversion/swap question it was a nightmare: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f120...e-help-294279/
if your carb conversion is a hillbilly hack like that was, you might find some relevant into in there.

I have seen several trucks where they carb one that was a fuel injected truck and it has always been a big wiring mess under the hood. Since you have it running now as a carb truck. I would stick the motor in and keep it as it is. Trying to take the 90 model and make it a fuel injected is too many differences and would be a bigger mess.
In my 85 build below, a previous owner tried to stick a 92 set up in the 85, it was a disaster and why I was able to buy it cheap. Two different generations with numerous differences. You would need to swap harnesses from front bumper to rear bumper. I am not joking about the bumper to bumper bit either, Plugs and wiring colors change from year to year in the same generation. Fuse box under the hood in some cases wont interchange. Especially going from a carb to fuel injected.
