Most Common Engine Oil Leaks ?

I have a small leak, more like a seep. Seems to be collecting very slowly and there is a small drip on the front drive shaft. Above the shaft it looks pretty wet on the back side of the engine, however my engine oil level is fine and there are no drip stains on the concreate.

So i thought this thread could help myself and others if 22RE owners could list off the typical and not so typical spots where engine oil starts seeping out from on the 22RE engine.

Thoughts ?

The valve cover gasket and the half-moon gaskets in the head seem to be common leaks

Mine leaks a bit from oil pump seal, prob a groove worn on shaft. There is a fix (sleave), but its so minor i'll do that when i change out my timing chain some year.

Most of the valve cover leaks are due to not bad gaskets, but failure to put FIPG in the corners where the gasket makes a 90 degree bend. The FSM shows specifically where to place the SMALL dabs of FIPG to prevent this.

Hey now, this isn't a Jeep forum.

Valve cover gasket itself

The half moon seals at both ends of the head (use RTV underneath them and a small dab on top at each corner -- the FSM explains this)

Front crank pulley seal

Oil pump o-ring

Distributor o-ring

Rear main seal

Oil pan to block junction

I'm probably missing something, but those should be in roughly descending order of frequency, give or take.

Given that, I'd say drive it forever and don't top up any fluids until you can figure out which fluid it is that's leaking.

Hypoid doesn't smell like brake fluid doesn't smell like engine oil doesn't smell like engine coolant doesn't smell like auto-trans fluid (used in the power steering system) doesn't smell like gasoline doesn't smell like fan-clutch oil.

Mine's a little leaky too. I haven't had a chance to try and pinpoint it yet though. I don't want to do any hijacking here, but since we're talking about oil leaks... Does anybody have any feedback, good or bad, on any of the oil stop-leak fluids?

don't use oil stop leak fluids, if anything just use a thicker oil like 10W40 or 20W50

Grab a front main seal from an old 22R (pre 85). It's a different depth, so it will sit on a different part of the crank, allowing it to seal without having to sleeve the groove. I put an 85+ seal on my 83 motor because of the groove worn in the crank and it worked great. Still running without any leaks.
