Has anyone actually tried advancing the timing and then running high octane (91+) gas to make up for the pinging? Or does the engine automatically account for this with the anti-knock sensor?

better than the 3vze? no Ya gotta remember that the 3vze makes more torque at 1200 rpm than the 22re/rte/whatever at its peak.

pay no heed to the nay sayers. 3.0s CAN be made to move...mine does

anyhoo a 3.4 swap would work well, or just tune into the several threads on here about getting the 3.0 more power.

MUDN4R gutting your cat is not a way to make power. You just opened up a large void in the middle of your exhaust & killed your flow. Get a testpipe or a highflow cat with the same I.D. as the rest of your exhaust.

haha bumpin' i think my runner is quick also..compared to what i used to be from stock ive noticed a huge increase in power.

I have..
Toybox fab ISR pipe (modded)
Custom 2" exhaust w\glasspack muffler and stock tailpipe
modded airbox

another thing to concider is that im currently running 225's..but i have 4.56 gears...so acceleration for me is going to be a little bit faster but, when i get my 32's soonish im sure i will feel change in accleartion but will see improved gas mileage

and remeber im at about 121k miles right now and im still running an orignal 02 sensor and PCV valve. (yea yea im getting around to it...someday)

in summer i get about 15-16 mpg with heavyish driving and durring winter i get about 12-13 mpg because of winter gas and more frequent 4wd use.

Look into ignition systems. I put a jacobs ignition in mine and it gave me more power. Also, electric fans will free up a little. Depending where you are located, you may hardly ever use the electric fan except for when sitting still for a long time.

going along with what he said...you're actually gonna lose torque after gutting your cat. i foolishly did this last summer and definitely only got negative results, plus it gives it a dirty, gargling sound. a high flow cat with new muffler and pipe is really the only way of getting more out of the exhaust. headers are another option, and will give you a little more pickup, but again you're gonna lose torque going that way too...i've just learned to deal with it until i can afford the 3.4 swap

I have. 15degrees BTDC with TE1 and E1 jumped. 89 octane. REALLY wakes it up. Search for my name and look for a thread named "3vze timing revisited" or something like that.

Cool

Yep. Aslong as you don't go past where ignition timing is benifitial, you can bump the entire powerband down a couple, to a few hundred rpm.
Throttle responce also increases.

Oh my god, you guys compairing the old i4's to any of the v6's LoL!

It's not only a pretty dumb comparison, but it's annoyingly not even in the same ballpark...

From LC's site Stock 22r-e VS fully built 22r-e

Here
22R-E 1983-86 105bhp@4800rpm 137ft-lb@2800rpm
22R-E 1990+ 112bhp@4600rpm 142ft-lb@3400rpm
22R-E 1990+ 108bhp@5000rpm 138ft-lb@3400rpm

VS stock 3vz-e:

Here
3VZ-E 1990 150bhp@4800rpm 180ft-lb@3400rpm

Here's an idea, those 22r-e's are strapped on an engine dyno, and not installed in the truck, on a chassie dyno.
The 3vz-e just owned them both. It's an AFM cog adjustment & distributor adjustment away from making the LC "built" 22r-e's peak horsepower at the WHEELS.

ROTFLMAO!

Sheesh... You guys go too far with the power compairisons.

Yes, but consider if it wasn't american, before the internet, there was no US aftermarket support for any import.

There's more power in that brick. I think a lot of people think they suck cause many of them are in heavy (IIRC 2.5+ton) Runners with autos. I think 180 hp out if it with a much better powerband is a real good goal.
