so i recently installed a supra lsd in my truck. little background on my rig is its a 1990 2wd i swapped a 7mgte/r154 into about 4 years ago. at first i tried stock 7.5" 2wd rearends welded up and they didn't hold up too well with my abuse. i snapped two axles and shatter one diff and ring/pinion. after getting tired of changing axles i got lucky and a v6 2wd happen to be at the local yard so i pulled the axle and bought it right away. haggled them down to 150 cause who wants 2wd parts right???.....lol. so that was about 2 years ago. lost interest to do anything with my truck beside just driving it and using as a dd so i ran the open diff and stock wheels. recently i decided i wanted to make it worthy of doing a little off roading again so i got some 30x9.5x15 mudrovers. the gearing and open diff wasn't cutting it. if you don't know the 2wd v6 rearend has the larger 5 lug axles and 8 ring of the 4wd but it has the 4wd 4cyl 3rd. pretty strange. ive had a spare supra lsd from a parts car i got a while ago so all i needed was a v6 3rd. come to find out my buddy's dads shop had a dead v6 runner with 4.54 just what i was looking for!!!

first i tore down the lsd to clean the clutch plates and shim it for more breakaway. then i pulled the bearing on the non ring gear side and installed the thinner runner one. then i swapped the ring gear over to the lsd. then put it in the 3rd housing and set the backlash back to .011" where it was. that went really smooth without any hold ups.






next i pulled the 3rd out of my truck. i noticed one of the studs was too long for the new 3rd so pulled that out. slide the new third under the truck. pick it up and went to put it in my housing and IT DIDNT FIT!!!!! i was like wtf!!! out of all the write ups and threads i read i didn't see this being a issue. im positive i had the right rear end the axle splined to the supra lsd and the 3rd that was in there had a 8" ring. after i was done freaking out i went to see what was making it not fit. come to find out the bearing adjust was hitting the housing on the non ring gear side! i compared mine to other pictures and the thread engagement looked similar. idk what the deal was but i decided i was too far into it to stop so i notched the housing so i could get it in. then i go to slide the axles in and one of them feels like it hits a dead wall about a 1/8" before going all the way in ......so i flip out again for a bit. then calm down and measured the length of the axle and the length down the housing before it hits the lsd which was more than enough for the axle to slide in. end up being it was just a tight fit from the axle to the housing had nothing to do with the lsd or different 3rd.......



ive had it in there for about a month and its working nice and smooth. took it out to the riverbar a couple times and it did better than i remember. was able to go through soft sand, mud, and cross the river even haha. didnt get stuck once. and of course it can do awesome drifts and roost like crazy when boosting so thats always fun ! between the tires and lsd its crazy how much more capable the little truck is. im please with the results even though it was sorta a pita at the time. hope this helps somebody in the future too cause i sure would have liked to know this before lol

how hard do you drive it and what size tire do you run? any strength issues running the 8"?

 

Interesting. The only issue I've ran into was putting a v6 third into a 4cyl housing. There will be clearance issues. I wouldn't worry about notching the housing.

 

The supra came with a torsion LSD if you cleaned clutches than it's not a torsion LSD which uses gears not clutches.

Hard to tell by your pics. I can't find the pics of one I pulled out of a front axle.

 

The LSD he used is from a MKIII supra (88-92), Which uses clutches.
The torsion LSD is 93 and later and does not work in the 4R/PU 8" diff.


This is a project I am trying to do to get rid of the Sparten I have now, But have not found a seller not trying to gouge or one in pick a part as of yet.

But I have pulled a torsion out of an 8" before. Believe I sold it on this site. Might be other options out there for you.

 

The Detroit True-Trac LSD is a Torson type carrier that can be got for Toyotas.
Maybe thats what you found.

when i do take it out im pretty hard on it. going to make a video of this little run i like to do soon maybe i'll post it. for tires i run a 30x9.5x15 dunlop mudrover in the back and bfg all terrain in the front. the 8" has held up well so far but ive been easier on it then when i first did the swap and was really beating on it running like 13psi now its only on like 6-7psi for better mileage.

and punchy is right about the mk3 supra lsd other than the 1jz mk3 supras from japan came with a torsion diff but those are pretty rare and don't like lots of hp unlike the clutch type one that can handle whatever you throw at it.
