metallic clacking sound while in reverse

Okay I have 1987 Toyota pickup 22r g54 4x4 with just over 273k it just started to make a metallic clacking sound while in reverse only with clutch applied once clutch is released it goes away doesn't do it in forward gears just reverse with clutch applied ck u-joints they are good I do have good amount of play at the tail shaft and when you move it by hand you can hear sounds like gears hitting in the trans ck trans fluid its good had changed it 10k ago due to previous owner hadn't and water had mixed with the oil, also while decelerating in gear clutch applied sound like a grinding/whinning noise in the clutch area previous owner had swaped the engine not sure if they replaced cutch ck the bellhousing to engine bolts all are there, there is a crack and piece of the bell missing been that way since I bought it any help would be great

For some reason I think you're looking for an answer along the lines of "It will be fine just ignore it", you're going to have to pull the transmission no other solution other than let it come apart whenever it decides it wants to in a spectacular catastrophic display...

Tranny bearing, output bearing for sures, presumably a shattered clutch plate and who knows what awaits you.

My condolences.

Yeah I figured I couldn't ignore it, how hard is it to rebuild the g54 I have rebuilt automatics and a few 13 speeds so I have the knowledge of working on transmissions just don't have any diagrams or service books and any suggestions on clutches it is a daily driver does rock auto have good clutches

If you have rebuilt automatics, I think a manual would be easier for you. I had my transmission removed, rebuilt, reinstalled for $1385 in Dallas, TX in the middle of my Route 66 road trip.
