I doubt they actually do anything more than change some lookup tables and set points in the ECU memory. I may have to go pull the lid on my truck's ECU(again) and see what chips are living in there(because I didn't take pictures last time). I can understand it being difficult if Toyota used custom chips like Ford did, but if they didn't.....

There is a guy on this forum that is turbocharging his 3.0. That would be a good candidate for a standalone.

want to avoid the head gasket problems, find a set of studs instead of the replacement head bolts. the bolts have a huge torque variance, thats why the 6cyl engines blow gaskets like crazy.the studs have almost no variance, and you don't need to tap the holes and replace the bolts anytime you tear the heads off.

actually, if im not mistaken, most of the blame in the head gasket problem is because of the design of the crossover and how the passenger side dumps right into the drivers side right at the #6 cylinder...

ive been having dreams for days about turboing a 3vz, and if i do, i WILL be using ARP Studs...

Y'all all are aware, aren't you, that the Megasquirt system is illegal on any vehicle that's used on road ?

I knew that for cali but I dont see why it would be in other states? Or in cali actually, I'm guessing you could get it to run better/cleaner with it tuned properly?

ANY standalone is, but I wouldn't exactly tell a smog tech about mods they can't see....

Some people claim they can, but in reality....probably not. Whether or not the vehicle will pass a sniffer hinges on being able to keep emissions under the limits with just a cat converter.

Technically, it is illegal in Cali or any other state that defers to Cali regs (and there are a few of them), and is absolutely illegal per Federal regs. However California in particular, and other states that have adopted Cali regs / laws, have laws in place that will permit certification of modifications if those modifications can be demonstrated to not increase emissions above "certified" levels.
The points of contention revolve around which laws take precedence. The Constitution allows for the Federal government to regulate or pass laws governing things the State(s) do not reserve for themselve(s). Since California has passed its own laws governing emissions, the Federal government has no legal precedence nor jurisdiction restricting things any further. Possibly even more pertinent is the fact California's emissions are more strict than Federal regulations, which in turn means that anything California or other states adhering to California's regulations permit will be at least as good as Federal standards.
Since California's regulations are more strict than the Federal regulations, and California has procedures in place which allow "custom" modifications to be reviewed and approved on a "case-by-case" basis provided the modifications do not adversely affect emissions, any state which also adopts California standards and regulations, means the Federal government has little, if anything, to say about it.

It's illegal to modify/alter any emissions equipment on any vehicle.
Since I figured that some of you wouldn't have a clue about that based on postings here before stating that, I e-mailed 'em and I'm including my e-mail to them and their reply back to me.
Note, for those who won't read the whole reply that it can:
lead to substantial fines and penalties
Below is the e-mail:

Hello Fred,

Officially, All parts are sold for OFF ROAD RACE-ONLY ground-vehicle use only. Aftermarket EFI/EMS systems are not for sale or use on pollution controlled vehicles. Alteration of emission related components constitutes tampering under the US EPA guidelines and can lead to substantial fines and penalties. Your state/district may also have specific rules restricting your tampering with your vehicle's emissions system. In short, as stated before, our official policy has to be RACE or OFFROAD USE-ONLY in ground based vehicles ONLY.

The MegaManual has more information here about this, http://www.megamanual.com/tamp.htm

Thanks,

Justin Shahan
