Hey guys, I currently have an 89 pickup, and I want to build a very high performance 22R Motor for it. because I'm finding an unfortunately shallow pool of info on this subject, I've decided to consult the yotatech community. First question: should I start with a pre 85 block, or the post 85 block? I'm leaning toward a pre85 to do a 20r head switch. Also, I have a holley model 2300 350cfm carb I want to use on it. I'm not sure why nobody seems to do so. Any insight?

Also, no propane, and I'm not interested in cutting corners and going cheap. This is a long term build that I want to do everything possible to. Oh, and I will probably get a Camden supercharger by the time all is said and done.

High performance and 22r's don't go together, that's why your not finding a lot of info on it.
Get a different motor for "high performance". My two cents.

Ok, also no engine swaps. I am well aware that I would get much better performance results by putting a 273 in it and it will bolt right up to the bell housing on my 4 speed, however that is not my question. I am doing this as something really cool, so anyone talking about engine swaps need not reply. I'm 19 and I've owned 17 22r vehicles, I really love the 22R and want to bring the most power I can out of the engine as a sort of tribute to what an incredible engine the 22R is.

The reason why no one would put such a big carb on a small engine is because it hampers both and totally lose bottom end.


There is a formula for choosing how much CFM you need for specific displacement, You can google it, You should be looking for a 175 CFM to 200CFM max if you want to keep any low end and efficiency.


Suggest keep the 22RE.

17 22r vehicles... by 19?!?! You should be the one with all the know how. How does one get to such a number of a certain vehicle and still have faith to keep going? If your dead set on that engine and want more I'd say go up to at least EFI and plumb a turbo for it. I would say ported and polished heads with headers but headers on a 22r is like a pad lock on a foam cooler, looks like it's doing more than it is....17 22r's????

These engines are very expensive to get very little horse power gain.

it must be nice at 19 to have the cash flow to spend several thousand to build a engine

They build power in the head

you want to go with a cam for the rpm range you plan to use.

over size valves

port and polish is a given

exhaust to help the engine breathe better.

decide now if your adding boost so you can adjust your compression now instead of redoing the engine when you add the boost later.

interesting you have had quite a few of these engines yet fail to understand it is a poor platform for building any real horsepower.

High performance 22r/re.....eh I wouldn't say those words. Peppy fun to drive? Now that can be achieved. As others have stated I also would go with an RE just fir the simple aspect of fuel injection. Also as stated above these do make power in the head. Head options are somewhat limited you have engine builder, 22reperformance, and LCE. personally I would build up the bottom end nicely, nothing over the top like forged internals, and put a good free flowing head on with a cam.
bolt ons are pretty much pick of the litter but don't expect nothing ridiculous.

i would build a solid motor with a decent cam, port polish and as stated above add some boost!
