Mass Air flow sensor
Buying a 1991 Toyota pickup this weekend. Its a Single Cab, 22RE, 4x4, Auto Trans, 120K miles.
Seller says Mass Air Flow Sensor is out of spec throwing a CEL.
Should I be worried about driving it 1.5 Hours home (Mostly Highway) if the engine is running rich because of the bad Mass Air Flow Sensor?
If it is not called the Mass Air Flow Sensor, then please correct me. I am very new to these trucks.

If it has a MAF it is not a 22re
These have a Variable Air Flow Meter most times called a AFM
Maybe I am just getting paranoid in my old age
If It has one code how many more does it have
Find out just what # code
#26 One of those things it could be simple or it might be bad enough the engine quits on the way home
It might be anything in the fuel circuit or the ECU
I hope you are in a state with no Emissions
To me the CEL being on reduces the price quite a bit .
It would need new Tires and The body should be all one color maybe $500.00

Truck is in good shape. It has a new Virginia Inspection sticker. The body is straight no dents only surface rust in few places on the frame. Body is all matching and is all one paint color. Interior is in excellent shape the Seat has no rips or tears in it and the Dashboard is not cracked. I'm buying it for $4,000 which is what Toyota trucks of that age, in good condition with low miles go for in my area.
Thanks for correcting me on the AFM.
If the engine running rich wont destroy the pistons to drive it home I will.
My buddy Ryan is going to be following me back to his automotive shop where he works and fix the AFM and the A/C
It looks like a good little truck that hasn't been abused or Molested with body lifts or the ever so popular wheel spacers with 15 inch wide tires.
Thank you for your reply.

Toyota calls the VAF a Volume Air Flow meter http://web.archive.org/web/201209071...33volumeai.pdf. (Though sometimes a Vane air flow meter). It's a different technology than a Mass air flow meter; the mass of air in a given volume changes with temperature. So follow wyoming9's advice and just call it an AFM.
Codes 25 and 26 CAN be caused by a VAF problem, but it's pretty unlikely. The more likely CEL you would get from a VAF issue is 24 or 31.
But given that your seller referred to a Mass Air Flow Sensor, it's likely he doesn't know how to read codes either. Or, is willing to "exaggerate" a bit to get you to buy it.
Welcome to YotaTech, and here's to hoping you can get that issue fixed easily.

The seller says the code was Code #2 OBD1 when he had it scanned at and auto parts store. Hope that helps clear up what's going on with the truck. Thanks for everyone's help

Hmm. You're going to need one of those time machines. One-digit diagnostic codes were last used in the 1987 model. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...des/#Early22RE
Or you can just read the code yourself; 4crawler has a good explanation for how to do it.

Down below on that page it says code 2 or 31 they have just about the same causes.
EDIT: The truck I'm looking at is also a 1991 so not sure which is right or if the codes are interchangeable.

wow - aftermarket plastic tank radiator?
and they kept the OEM constant tension clamps - YES
unmolested engine compartment
I like the OEM protective wire channel on the left (mine does not have that)

I'm excited to be picking this truck up this Sunday. I'm not 100 percent sure what these motors are supposed to look like, so any help from you guys would be extremely helpful.

Update
Brought the truck home yesterday safe and sound everything works as it should except the A.C. The Automatic transmission shifts great and I am really impressed with this little truck and how responsive and peppy it feels. It made 70-75 mph cruising on the highway without much effort at all. Tested the 4wd high and 4wd Low and it all engaged effortlessly. My buddy and I will be looking it over thoroughly and will try to find a vacuum leak that we can hear in the engine compartment as well as all fluids , ball joints, wheel bearings, and breaks.

Received the new AFM in the mail and had to heat up the bolts to remove the old AFM. While installing the new AFM we tore the new gasket because it rotated in place when threading the bolts back in. Does anyone have any input on making the gasket not spin and tearing?
