WRONG clutch!
OK. So I am the reluctant (and hopefully temporary!) owner of this clutch kit from Marlin Crawler. I bought it about a year and a half ago when my clutch seemed to be going under. But it was winter, and as the weather warmed up, the pressure plate got strong (old spring fatigue), so it made it another year.
I clearly told the kid helping me, more than once while ordering (Marlin Crawler) that this is a 2WD 1994 extracab (before Tacoma) with 22RE. He didn’t know that Marlin Cawler does not sell clutches for 2WD trucks! So when I got my transmission down, I found that the AISIN CT-076 pressure plate was TOO BIG, and wouldn’t fit. Apparently, the kid just didn't know the 2WD clutch is smaller. I had to go to a local discount auto parts store and get a cheap Taiwanese clutch kit, because it was Sunday morning and my truck was in pieces!
Rather than beg Marlin Crawler to take it back (more than a year after the sale), I chaulked it up to my own learning curve. So, I have this excellent clutch kit (AISIN is OEM!), Marlin Crawler part number MC-11008 (they’ve changed there part numbers, so you can’t find this one on there website), including:
New throw out bearing (Nachi CB56005)
New pilot bearing (6201RZ)
New disk Seojin SECO 48615, and alignment tool
New pressure plate (Aisin CT-076)
set of new heavy duty plate mounting bolts and lock washers (I ordered that too)
On Monday morning, Marlin Crawler told olharleyman that this is a TURBO 22RE clutch kit, but that is not true! This is one of their 1200 lb clutch kits. I think it is the same pressure plate they still sell, same throwout bearing (Nachi) maybe a different disk manufacturer, and maybe a different pilot bearing manufacturer than they carried more than a year ago, but it is for a 92-95 4WD DLX Pickup with 2.4L 22RE. That is what the receipt shows (yes, I still have it). It still costs exactly what I paid ($179, +20 shipping)!
Check this out…If you go to parts train dot com or one of the other aftermarket parts online sites and navigate to say, 93 4WD 2.4L Pickup DLX, you can see clutch and clutch kit part numbers. Then do it again for olharleyman’s 22RE 4Runner, and the SAME clutch kit part numbers are shown. Clearly the same clutch kit.
If you can use this, tell me. I can’t. Good parts, but not for my truck! This clutch kit was invoiced as a clutch for a 92-95 Pickup 2.4L (4WD!), but I know it fits other 22R trucks. You can check by the cross reference method above.
Yes, I am a newbie. My Toyota is a 94 Extracab with two add-a-leaf kits and a 5 inch spindle kit, with 15 rims (the OEM was 14" on the 2WD). I also added a bored throttle body (LC Engineering) and full 2.25" exhaust system (LC Engineering 4-into1). Maybe I can get some links to photos of all of this work up soon.
