Man, I can't even figure out how to get the spare wheel lowered
Dang, I really need to come up with an owner's manual or service manual for this 89 Runner!!
How do I get the spare pulled off the vehicle? I can't figure out how to lower it down.
Pilots and old 4Runners just don't mix!!

You should have a real long shaft with a hook on the end somewhere in the truck. I think under the back seat, maybe, or in one of the storage panels in the back (that's where mine is). And a shorter shaft section, as well as a flat piece with a handle sicking out in the little green bag. Slide the long shaft with the hooked end forward into the slot above the rear bumper that looks like a cheap drwaing of Saturn (slot with a larger hole in the center) until it mates with a circular piece of metal above the spare with a slot in it too. Put the handle on (the flat piece) and crank ccw. Should lower the spare right on down. You may need to add the additional shorter shaft section on to get it to reach. I don't recall having to, but it's been a while (knock wood!). If you've never lowered the spare, or it's been a while, you may want to hit the (for lack of a better term) spare tire winch with some WD-40 to free it up, or it'll be a real bear to turn.
The long hooked piece is also the way you raise and lower the factory jack. You hook the hook into the loop at teh base of the jack, put the handle on, and awaaaaay you go!
And old 'Runners and pilots do SO mix nicely! I love mine...
Anyway, hope all that mindless babble helps a little...

I tried getting the real long handle out (it's in the compartment where the jack is at) and of course, it won't come out until I lower the rear window and drop the tail gate. And, of course, I have to go grab the battery out of the riding lawn mower to run the window (the window can only be run up and down by using a couple "jumper wires".....the switch won't run the window at this time).
Man, have I said I need a manual, yet??!! Thanks for the help!!!!!

And yeah, I tried using a pipe wrench on the round thing that holds the spare tire on. Turned the round thing in both directions, but all it did was compress the spring!! Wizard.

I have the '85 FSM in PDF, if you want I can email it to you. Just send me an email. Itwas scanned in as pics, not text, so you can't do a search in it, but all the pages are there and very legible. I can take my laptop out when I work on the truck now. A lot easier.

If you are going to keep the rig, invest in a hardcopy of the FSM. I have it in hardcopy and PDF format. Makes things very easy to work on and research.
Don't waste your time w/ the other manuals. The OEM owner's manual also has quite a bit of useful information as well on a couple pages...all the rig specs for fluids etc.

Yeah, I'm searching for a genuine service manual (checking ebay as well) on this in the classifieds section. I do have a question:
Will the service manual for the 84-88 models work for my 89? They should be pretty close, right?
