It's been below zero for a week now and doesn't look like its gonna get any better. so I bought this:

Kat's 1160 300-Watt Magnum Handi-Heat Magnetic Heater for 55 bucks from amazon.

Couple questions:
1. Good buy?
2. Best placement of this?
3. Do they really help?

I used a magnetic block heater (think I stuck it on intake side by oil filter or on oil pan) and a battery blanket on my 1984 ex cab when stationed in Alaska. Well worth it...just don't back up with out unplugging your truck.
I wish I had pics of people I saw do that

 

I've used one over the years when my block heater crapped out. They are great, but be carefull how long you leave it plugged in, especially if it's not too cold. Depending on the model, they can get the oil cooking pretty good. I use a timer on mine; even it it's -40 or colder, a couple of hours on a cold engine and it's cranking over like a champ.

 

Good call..been 15 years since I was stationed in Alaska..forgot the timer..

 

plus it save on the power bill. electric heaters suck a lot of energy.

I use my magnetic heater in addition to my block heater. The block heater does the coolant and the magnet gets stuck to the oil pan so I have instant oil pressure. Starts no matter the weather!
