Machine Work Cost

There are some threads about the costs of a rebuild, but none that are recent and none that are specific to the machine shop costs. What is the going rate today for a machine shop?

The reason I ask is I just got quoted $1100 to have the block hot-tanked, bored, honed, and decked to have the crank ground and polished, and to have new pin bushings pressed into the rods. This seems high, and honestly I'm wondering if it's worth it. A brand new bare block and crank are probably about the same amount

Any advice would be much appreciated

It has a lot to do with where in the world you live!!

Just what your getting done

How much are we boring ??

How much needs to be decked ?

Milling the other front end parts to match interesting things like that

.What kind of tolerances were working with.

Without seeing just what shape your goodies where in who can say if that price is high

I think one of the big factors is do I really want to do this job!!

If I don`t quote it high enough that if you bite it will ease the pain of doing the job

As an example installing a trailer hitch it was a long week I did not want to really do the job

I quoted $500.00 plus the cost of the hitch they bit not bad for about 1 1/2 hours.

Not a machining operation but the same principal .

"New" parts will have to be measured at the minimum and cleaned. Inflation is just a steady decrease in what a buck will by. When I pay $2.30 for coffee in a chain coffee shop...my mind drifts back to the days when it was a dime or 15 cents. You could go online and type in "automotive machine" in the city or metropolitan or small town of your choice. You might get "white pages" with links to shops that have price lists published on their site, or an email address where you could ask them to email or fax you a copy .

Just curious were you asked to source your own parts ??

It all comes down to supply and demand .

So the price quoted is just for the machine work no assembly ??

Now if the case is the machine work and all the assembly of the short block with Ted`s parts

I think that is a great price

Going with new head or heads .

Like any other purchase if the price seems high seek else where.

If I recall correctly my last complete rebuild was $1300 or so and that was using Teds parts. I forget what Teds complete kit cost but subtract that from the $1300 and that was what my machine work cost me. $500-$800?? machine work.

I enjoy building a motor but some times cost does come in to play or how fast I need to get the truck back on the road. I have bought some motors online and not had any problems with them and for about the same cost as a rebuild I can have the truck moving a lot faster then I can rebuild one. If you shop around, you should be able to get a rebuilt motor for what you are going to have into the cost of what you are talking about. Your quote seems high to me.
