losing the junkyard transmission gamble?

Hey folks- I've got an '89 pickup with a 22re, 4wd. i've had it 2 years & the transmissions been bad since i've had it. last month the clutch wore out, so I got a tranny from a junkyard & had a mechanic put that in along with a new clutch assembly. This transmission whines in 3rd and 5th and is still very hard to shift. i was thinking about changing the fluid to the redline mt90 i've been hearing about, & need to know how much i'll need and if there is any chance it will make anything better.

Could be the shifter seat is worn? Cheap fix thanks to Mr Marlin. https://www.marlincrawler.com/hardwa...-forward-shift

What makes it hard to shift? Grinding? not finding gears? Just sluggish?

Welcome to the forum!

it grinds a little going into 3rd. the worst is trying to go from N into 1st. no grinding, just very hard to put in gear, to where you feel like youre just going to break something. shifts through the gears OK while driving. a little sluggish though.

New shifter seats cured the "hard to get into 1st gear" in mine.

Just curious, how much were you able to pick it up for and how much was the Install? I am going to do the exact same thing soon with a junkyard donor. Hope the shifter seat fixes it. Also check your fluid level. I had a leaky slave and it made it impossible to go into 1st.

I rolled the dice on a junkyard W56b tranny and transfer case last December, for my '87 4Runner. Paid $200 from a yard in Tucson, but had to remove it from the wreck myself.
Bought Marlin boots, shifter seat and socket. Aisin clutch kit from Ebay cost about $115.
Wife and I stabbed it into the truck on Christmas afternoon........ Priceless.
Tranny and transfer case are perfect.
Every once in a while, things just turn out right

My condolences to the OP.

I got the transmission for 300 plus core charge, & the yard delivered it to my workplace which was nice cause it was about an hour from my house. then about 100 for clutch kit, and i paid 450 for the install. he also put in new cylinders & that fluid level looks good. not a bad deal, just gotta see if i can get it working a little better.

So lucky to have a wife wrench with you. Mine would rather buy me a new truck than help me with my"old truck" but I'm not having that!

I bought one and it had the 5th gear whine, it had been sitting for 4 years according to the owner. After about 100 miles the whine went away. If it had the whine and wasnt sitting very long, chance are it will never go away. I tried the fluid changes and different fluids and never did get rid of the whine.

Typically the cost around here to change a clutch is $600 and that does include the parts and getting the flywheel resurfaced. Probably an average price across the country, give or take a few dollars.

Any more now when I change a clutch, I just go ahead and get a new slave cylinder. Seems like in the past I would change the clutch a within a year the slave cylinder would go bad. Now I just do it all at once to save the headache of doing it again later.
