glad to hear the good news

Nice to hear you've made your decision. A good choice if I may add. it would be nice if you could find an 85 turbo (RET 4cyl). keep on the look out for that. EFI, Solid front Axle and turbo, it'll be hard to find, but they are a real prize if you've got one.

The 3.0 is noticeably more powerful than the 22RE, but the difference isn't huge. The 3.0 still feels slow. I chose the 22RE for the following reasons. A friend who had owned both said the 22RE had 20% less power but 30% better economy and was way more reliable (his words, not mine). Also, the 22RE is easier to work on (simpler, more space in the engine bay) and easier to diagnose the problems. Coming from a 5.0L Mustang, you probably are going to miss the power, but its a truck, not a muscle car and I've gotten quite used to my 22RE (granted, from a 2000 Corolla). It keeps up with most cars on the higway on all but steep hills. Its not unpleasant to drive with a 22RE.

The 3vze would be my choice (and already is as you can see).

The 3vze is a very reliable engine.

Also, 3vze equipped trucks & 4runners come equipped with better components. Bigger brakes, better master cylinders, WAY better manual transmission (R150 is about as bulletproof as it comes), better rear ends & gears (for performance/towing/offroading), and in most much easier to find trucks with options with 3vze's than 22RE's.
