Pull em apart and put em back together again and again. You might need to install them in the locked position to get them to work properly.

Once i have got the hubs turned from lock to free , what is a method I can use to check that the truck had free hubs working?

the sound should be a dead giveaway, if the engine sounds quieter and doesent roar, also the truck should pick up speed faster.
