Locked IFS Verdict

Locked IFS Verdict
I posted a thread last week asking if anybody had a locked 7.5" ifs diff because I was thinking about locking mine. Anyway, I put a lockright in it. Played around in my woods today - it worked wonderfully. I have my own pit at the bottom of a small ravine which is usually pretty nasty. Occasionally if it has been sitting untouched I can get through once before it gets dug out (with a rear locker and 33s). I could only ever go through in one direction, entering by descending down the hill into it, then out on the flat end. Today I crawled through in low range in first gear, in BOTH directions. I almost idled through it and up the hill turning no more than 1200rpm. All four tires were turning. I turned the wheel all the way left and right and climbed out of the ruts just for fun. The locker worked extremely well, and I really didn't notice much steering wheel pull. I drove on some hard packed dirt in 4low too. This is when the steering wheel pulled a little, but it really wasnt bad. As long as I wasnt on the gas hard it unlocked around turns. Overall I'm very happy so far. Saturday we'll see how everything holds up in the mud bog with lots of throttle and the turbo spooled up,

I've been really happy with my LockRight in the front of my IFS, although this is my first yota and also my first rig with a locker. Seems like it can go anywhere. Still have an open rear though... I'll have to post some pics of it in the woods...

Glad it worked out. Good for your for trying it out.
Can you test it out in snow and ice sometime? I really want to know whether its as bad as some say, cause just the rear wasn't.

We don't get much snow and ice in Virginia; maybe once a year for two or three days, but if its snows I'll be sure to play a little bit and give you some feedback.
I would imagine in soft snow it would help you stay on top when going straight just like in thick mud, but when you start turning I think it might have the opposite effect. Because snow is so slick I don't see it unlocking unless you're down to hard ground, so one tire or both will be skidding a little going around a turn.

And Raginyota I really think you should. You'd be amazed how much of a difference it makes. It's kinda like how you feel when you first try out your first rear locker, except better. Why are you SASing? For more flex? You don't need too too much flex with two lockers. There isn't much that will stop you.

That right there is what's keeping me from SASing my rig, well that and the money involved. With the amount of wheeling I actually do I think I'd be just fine with a locker in the front, but then I want huge flex..... which I don't really need with a front locker...... but but but but
I guess the biggest concern for me is that I do primailry rocks and I don't know if the damn thing will unlock.
Ah the circular mental anguish that comes with off road passion, how I hate thee.

Skinsfan6: Did you ever have a chance to test out the front locker in the snow? The rear Aussie I have proved to be really well mannered on slippery road in 2wd. Can say I ever felt it was a danger at all.
I would value anyone's opinion who has actually driven a front locker in snow.

that's sort of my thought on the subject, especially since i'm planning on long travel, and i could always get a lockright/aussie, or selectable. if i end up SAS'ing, no money lost on the welded gears.... i don't really see why it's that big of a deal to put it in 2wd or unlocking my hubs.... is there something i'm missing here?

i've been running my ifs with an aussie on the snow- and ice-covered city roads since thanksgiving. once i get on the highway the roads are good enough i put it into 2wd. it's not bad. I can definitely feel the locker lock and unlock whenever i go on- and come off the throttle. i requires a good grip on the steering wheel, but i have tons of traction, and i make all my turns just fine.

I've never heard of anyone liking it once its done, and you've ruined your third member once done.
Muddpig, didn't you have a welded front diff and hated it?

I recently installed an aussie in the front of my 4runner...a week ago. I've been driving it on snowed over streets and snow mounds in parking lots and so far its much better traction. But I havent had a chance yet for the Icy stuff, or for some snow trails. So I'm not sure exactly how it will feel. But its fine so far.
