Is it legal to have the spare wheel in the back?

Hi,
I'm wondering if it's legal (Australia) to have the spare wheel in the back behind the rear seats and if so what proper method to secure it.

thanks if you can help me.

p.s 94 4runner, spent stupid amounts of money on it including fully reco engine, can't sell it for all I've put in to it, bigger than I need and I can't do much work on it myself but it's been running trouble free and like a breeze for years now. cept for the friggin air con. fixed once, broke again after two uses. bugger it, that's what windows are for.
very reliable. rear right tail light tends to blow regularly though....

Dunno if it is legal or not in Australia but aren't there tie downs?
Two ratchet straps in an "X" would do the trick

I would check with your local LEO

i really don`t know but how can they tell what is in there.

There should be some rings in the back I have them in my 92 .

I have my spare in there held in place with a ratchet strap.

What would be the difference if it was the spare tire or any other cargo you had in the back?

I have bought trucks new (Ford) that have the spare in the cargo area. I actually prefer the spare in the cargo area as when it is mounted to the back hatch, you lose a lot of visibiltiy. The truck I had was a little donut for a spare tire and with it being small and mounted on the side, it was a great set up for me. You will need to check Austrailas requirements.
