late 80's Yotas

Hey Fellas,

Is there a big difference between the 86-89 trucks and 4runners and the 90-95 ones? I kinda like the oldschool look of the 80's trucks, and I figure they should run just as well if they're cared for and have EFI

What do you think? Any ideas?

Couple things...

Since this isn't the "Newbie Forum", if you search (or just look around YT at the Tech section) you can find the answer.

Also, it might be more helpful if this was in the forum for 86-95 Pickups/4Runners.

Now on to your questions:

In 90, when the 4Runners changed body styles, they also changed over to linked coil-spring rear ends. The trucks stayed leaf springs in the rear. The engines are pretty much the like this for 4Runners:

22RE '85-'95
3.0 3vz V6 '88-'95
22RTE ??'86-'88??

All are fuel infected. The only 4Runners that didn't have fuel injection were pre-'85.

I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks,

Sorry for posting in the wrong place. Did the forums just get more specific? I just posted where my brower's bookmark was, and didn't notice that it had changed.

Yeah, they changed some of the stuff around. It's not that big a deal to post in the wrong forum, as there are many people knowledgable in lots of areas.

84-85 pickups and 84-85 4Runners are the same mechanically.
86-95 pickups and 86-89 4Runners are the same mechanically.
90-95 4Runners have coil spring rear suspension, otherwise are the same.

22R 81-87 (95 for 2wd) *I think*
22RE '85-'95
22RTE (turbo) '86-'87
3VZE 3.0 V6 '88-'95

Thanks for the info, guys. Does the non-coil spring suspension really bite?

What do you think about the turbos? Are they any good? I really don't know much about turbos - do they make maintenance a hassle or cause more need for repair?

I really want a 22RE 5-speed in it. Do they get pretty good mileage? I know my current 93 pickup with the 3.0 gets pretty atrocious mileage...

What dya mean non coil spring really bite?
Nothing wrong with leaf springs.

Avoid the turbos unless you are a mechanic.

22re 5 speed driven conservatively can easily get 20-21 mpg. 22-23 on highway trips. Neat thing though is they don't suffer as much if you put your foot in it a lot like the 3,0 does. Driven hard it's easy to lose 3-4 mpg with the 3,0 but I didn't see much loss with the 22RE, it still got 18-19 driven hard.

Good deal.

I'm checkin out a few soon.

There's a great one with low miles but it's a 3.0 auto combo. Is the drivetrain a tricky thing to change if I find a 22re 5spd setup?

toyota(as well as just about every japanese manufacturer) doesn't build their frames with interchangeable engine/tranny mounts, unfortunately. you'd be in for a ton of work if you were to convert a V6 truck to a 4 banger.

the 3.0/auto combo is gonna be a real dog. i'd hold out for something with a 5 speed.

Yeah the AT 3.0 I have currently can hardly climb hills. I'm all about the fuel economy though so that's why I really want a 4-banger.

if it's a 2wd i'd believe it.

oh yeah, the '89-95 trucks use longer leaf springs in the rear than earlier ones, they ride a bit softer.

Good catch, I forgot about that one. Important to remember if buying someone's used stuff...
