Knock sensors

I have an 88 runner with a 22re. I was outside the other day smoking, and glanced in my wheel well to find a knock sensor in the side of my block. But its not plugged in. I searched for a plug but cant find anything. Theres no check engine light on but I havent checked for stored codes. Ive been searching on which terminals to jump but havent found the right info. I dont know alot about this particular truck due to the fact that it went through several owners before coming to me. But what I do know is the motor has been rebuilt or replaced. Im betting on replaced. What I would like to know is, was there a certian set of years that had knock sensor and some didnt. Could I have a older motor in my truck or what not? Also there is no tps sensor, none. But there is no displayed cel. Im going pick up a new one tomorow. Im coming from the world of DSM's so im used to strange things. Thanks in advance.

It's hard to see its off to the left of the oil filter and it has a black boot covering it -- so you will probably need a light to see it

OK....scratch knock sensor. Must be an oil pressure switch unplugged. Whats directly under the oil filter?

A factory manual is on my list. Im a Honda tech so I know the importance of these.

I am not sure right away about which terminals to jump, but I can scan that page of my diagnostic manual for you tomorrow at lunch if you like.

The knock sensor is at about 10:00 from the oil filter the oil sending unit is at 6:00 you can see the galley leading to it. They must have plugged it or you would have oil blowing everywhere.

You must have been thinking of another thread, I do that sometimes. The TPS is on the TB.

The oil sensor is there just not plugged in. And I have no idea where the plug is.

You don't have a TPS and your truck runs fine? Man I'd have to see that, if I just unplug mine the ECU goes into safe mode, the idle jumps way up, and you get a CEL with code 41. Do you have an oilpressure gauge or an idiot light?

You should have a constant CEL not just a code stored and your idiot light should be lit saying no oil. Also your idle would be way up. I'm gonna PM you and ask some more ? instead of this back and forth stuff if that's cool with you.

It might be the FLUX CAPACITOR. Those were only available in SPECIAL EDITION rigs like yours.

Yeah that's pretty funny, why don't you try to help instead of being a smartass.

i find it very hard to believe it would run worth a crap w/ no tps, but as for the knock sensoer unplugged it wpuld run, it would just have a constant check engine light on and if there was a problem it wouldnt retard the timing.

The knock sensor is plugged in. I mistook the oil pressure sensor for the knock sensor. it looks like previous knock sensors ive delt with. Why theres no idiot light. I dont know.

It does run without the tps. Im in Louisiana. Come take a ride if you want. Basicly all its doing is setting fuel maps from what it sees from the MAF. Its not accurate and its not pretty but it works.

Im not familuar with the special edition. Where exactly is this flux compaciter located? Would it actually have anything to do with ecu fuel maps? Whats it look like on this model? Mabye that is unplugged as well on my truck. Is it in the haynes schmatics? Cause I cant find it in there. Also where is the Mr. Fusion located, or is this model supposed to still have the plutonium reactor, cause I dont see either.

I dont see this as being a stupid or newb question. I actually know what Im talking about with cars. I was seeing if there was possibly a problem wider than the tps that someone maybe would shed some light on. Ie wrong ecu, wrong throttle body, etc.....Thanks to bodo i actually learned something last night and didnt spend time defending myself.

For those who care I pulled a code 41 and code 51 out last night. And we will get to the oil pressure switch today if anyone wants to tell me what harness the plug runs in.

If you dont have a TPS how can you set the timing or expect it to ever run well?
Is this the only toyota 22re vehicle you have driven? You might be surprised at how much better it drives if you fix the missing sensors. I say sensors, becasue who knows what all it missing with the TPS missing.
