keep going through starters

i put a starter in my truck about a year and a half ago and it worked fine until about two months ago when it started doing that little 'weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' noise everytime i went to start it. so i installed another one and starting again today, its making the same noise. someone said my battery might just be tired but im not sure on that one. and someone else told me that my neative might not be ground good enough so it could be chewing through bendexes..im not too sure on either of these but any help would be appreciated because its very annoying and not a good part to have going all the time!...plus pop starting it all the time just kills me on the inside a little bit

did you use a oem starter? If not your problem is not uncommon. Pony up the dough and find a factory starter to rebuild or get a toyota starter new. Just my 2 cents as i went through two autozone starters with the lifetime warranty before i found a junkyard toyota starter and rebuilt it via 4crawlers page.

don't know why just from experience. I would still check the grounds and clean the connections if you replace it again. Others might have different experience just my 2 cents. Might even be able to rebuild the one you have to save money as well. Check 4crawlers site good info there for starter rebuild if i'm not mistaken.

I learned a few years ago when my son and I rebuilt his '91 MR2 turbo that paying a bit more for new Denso products pays off in the long run. And the other trick I learned back in the mid '90's is to NEVER use Bosch products. Ever. For anything. Unless it's things they can't possibly screw up, like...... well, I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but they must make one thing well......

Low voltage from a weak battery or connections.

For what it's worth, I'm going over to a small private auto parts guy (that my deisel mechanic just turned me on to) and am gonna look at his brand new made in Japan starters for the 3.0. They're not Densos but he's selling them for $98.00 a pop. If they look good I'll see if he can get anymore of them for any of you who may be interested....

No starter thread would be complete without it! Helped me out a lot.

been there...

my old 4runner (6-8 years ago) used to eat through starters every other month. I would always pull it and go to autozone to grab another one, and just accepted it as the cost of driving a 4runner (i was 16-18 at the time)

My new 4runner started to have the same starter problem where I would turn the key, the power would come on, and only a high-pitched whine would come from where the starter was. I did the typical tap start (tie the ignition key to "on", and tap the starter with the jack rod) and it fired right up.

Turns out, after checking 4crawlers site and forums, that the 2 brass solenoid contacts in the starter had worn unevenly, which was not letting it finish the connection when the solenoid was depressed. so I just ordered some contacts from his site, pulled and replaced them; and it's worked perfect since. I plan on buying about 2-3 sets of the contacts just to have onhand.

I figure the way autozone used to do is; I would take my starter that wasn't starting in as a core, they would send it off to the remanufacturer who would bench test it; find it worked for them, and would slap "remanufactured" onto it and send it back out. so just cause it says remanufactured doesn't mean they went over it and made sure everything was correct, just means they tested it and checked it over and everything looked good.

I have local family owned auto electric shop I use and they tell me the remans use a thin piece of generic contact and some lame resistors in the remanufacturing sweat shops. Ford and chevy, Honda, aren't a real problem, Toyota and Dodges, garbage remans.

My Toyota starters and alternators go to him and he is worth every penny, saves me the labor of changing one out so often. The Chevy we get a reman from One Stop.

What really made a dif for me was having to do one on a four runner 4wd, the 88 basic 2wd drive was not problem twenty minutes, but still shouldn't have to do it over twice a year.

Your prpblem has jjust begun. Get a local rebuilder to put a good part in it. Frankly, since finding this place, I think I could do it myself.

My stock 20 year old starter does this.
Never have gotten around to fixing it.
I just let it do it a few times, wait a minute, and she always starts up

Many things could be the culprit. Is this happening with a hot/cold engine? Is there any oil or fluids leaking down on it? Do you mud bog it under muddy water often? I agree with the factory starter being better than a cleaned up reman from auto store. They are just walmarts for auto parts.
