Just bought an 86' 4runner, need some advice

Here are the problems I'm trying to sort out...

I have a hard time getting the truck started when it's cold. I've read that it might be the cold start injector? The truck starts fine after it's warmed up.

I also tryed to time the truck but according to the crankshaft pulley marking and the degrees marking, it's way off. Should I replace the timing chain? I have it set to where it runs very smooth and strong. Is there something else I need to do besides hook up the timing light to #1 plug wire?

The power steering pump box leaks, should I just replace the seal or the whole thing? Steering seems to have a lot of slack in it. I'm always fighting the truck from drifting all over the road.

The oil pressure gauge doesn't read, is it the sending unit?

That's all the questions I have so far. Thanks in advance.

oil pressure gauge

My gauge just recently went out and it was the sending unit. $50. Good luck with the yota.

Did you do the jumper thingy prior to checking the timing?

Nope. I figured there was a trick to it. On my mustang you pull a pill on the distributor wiring harness to adjust initial timing. Would you mind pointing out a good place that shows me what I need to do?

Anyone have any input on the cold start issue?

Try this.

Picture A are the ones you want. They plug in to dead end rubber caps on the driver side fender wall. Mine were just laying there and it took me a while to figure out that they belonged in the rubber holders. Noodle around on 4crawler's site awhile. There is gobs of good info there.

mine sucked at cold starting for awhile to but i replaced the fuel filter air filter and just tuned everytihgn up and it works great now. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with the cold start injector. As for me i think mine is goig ncrappy as well, When my yota doesnt start cold all i usually do is i have to crank it over holding full throtle. It will rarely start when i hold full throtle. After crankign it holding full throtle if i try to start it with no gas or very little it always will start right up. I mabey have to do this once every 2 weeks though.

Cold Start Injector Time Switch. It tells the Cold Start Injector when to kick in. Part# 89462-20010. This is only available at the dealer, runs about $150 from the dealer and $100 from a wholesale dealer. Get a hold of strap22 on this forum; he sells Toyota parts at wholesale prices.

Cool. Thanks guys.

What should I do about my power steering having a lot of slack and leaking power steering fluid?

I thought this was on 4crawlers site too, but now I can't find it. Here are a couple threads from this site about the slack.

Don't be afraid of that blinking yellow search button. It's your friend.

I have a leaker too and have just been filling it up with fluid periodically for the time being. I bought a used pump off e bay for about $20 to throw in there while I take a crack at rebuilding the original. I haven't found a writeup on the 22re pump but I did find one on the v6. Check it out. I also included a link to a FSM for a '93 someone was kind enough to post for us. It covers tons of stuff for our '86's. Good luck. And welcome to Yotatech BTW.
