Intermittent starting issue: 86 4Runner 22RE

When turning key to start truck (1986 22R-E,EFI-4runner), it clicks several times until it starts( sometimes it does not click, and sometimes it does). sounds like starter clicking, but have replaced the starter, and battery, and ECM, (all visible connections seem to be in order).Could this be starter relay issues, or possibly ignition switch failure?
I am really afraid to turn engine off once I start it (never knowing if it will start again)?

Starter won't start ?

I've had this problem for a while now. my truck is a 1986 4 cyl. 4 runner. The starter (relay??) just clicks, but my battery voltage is fine. It is intermittent, and eventually it always ends up starting when it feels like it?? I've replaced the starter/battery twice and determined that's not the cause. Could this be the RELAY or IGNITER? I hope someone has the cure because I cannot think what the issue is? I'm afraid to drive it anywhere!!

Dell, can't read your post. Are you using black text? If so, it does not show up so well on a black background.

Make sure ur battery clamps are clean and in good shape, if not replace them. If that doesn't solve it the replace the cables, it's possible they could be damaged somewhere or corroded inside the insulation. Also make sure the smaller positive wire that goes from the battery to the fuse block on the passenger inner fender is in good shape and the contacts are good and clean. Worst case scenario it's possible u got multiple bad starters but I doubt that's the case. Good luck.

Have you tried to hot wire your truck??

By that I mean making sure it is in neutral .

jumper from the the Big lug on the starter to the wire that energizes the starter solenoid.

If it cranks every time your problem is in the ignition circuit.

If you still have issues look to your ground cables .If your getting the clicks I lean more towards the ground cables.

If yours have never been upgraded it might be time

Should at least point you in the right direction.

you should hear 2 clicks, one behind the glove box and then the relay on the passenger fender well, if the starter is new and all your contacts are clean and all your grounds are in place that starer relay is usually the next culprit, best to get a friend to try and start it for you so you can listen for the click in the starter relay in the engine bay. It is silver and it will say starter relay or ignition relay. If it has no click it means it is defective. There is a great write up on fixing the click only starter problem by Rad4runner, here is a link.
