Yeah... ill make sure to do that... its gonna take a while tho...when i pulled the upper plenum off a piece of the old gasket fell in.. actualy make it into the head.. i can see it.. along with some other stuff (had a mouse nest under the plenum...vacumed real good but guess i didnt get evthing) so gonna have to clean up real good, gonna make a piece that fits the intake port nice and rig it to my vac.. hopefully that will do, otherwise i will be tearing the heads off too, and if im doin that im sendin them out to b re-done, hopefully i wont have to, cant really afford it now..been a long cold winter

The carbon build up is normal in those areas and won't hurt anything......although, it won't help anything, either. I suppose if you'd feel better sending them off and you have the dinero, it's definitely worth have them looked at.

The cost depends on the shop and what they have to do to it if it should need more than just an inspection.....like repairs and valve adjustments. I don't remember what it cost me to have the heads cleaned and inspected on my V6, though.
It's impossible for me to give you an honest assessment of whether or not what you're dealing with is okay. I can't see the engine. All I can tell you is that carbon is normal. If none of the valves look burned and none of the intake ports look heavily coated to the point of clogging, then you'd be fine knocking off what carbon you can with brake cleaner, a wire brush, scraper, and bottle brush. It would be a really good idea to check the valve clearances before it's all back together.
