I just installed new seals and o-rings on all four of my injectors (87 22re) and now after, probably less than 20-25 miles, the rear two are leaking fuel at the top side....or the end with the small o-rings. they were fine up until then.

when I was switching the old o-rings for the new ones, I thought that the new ones seemed a bit thinner but they fit well?

has anyone had this happen and should I just swap out the o-rings with fatter ones?

I just fixed a leak on my topside of my injector O-ring... If the rings were different sized than the ones from the factory, that is your problem for sure. They have VERY tight tolerances.

they seemed like the right diameter, in that they fit the shaft diameter well, but the thinkness seemed 'skinnier' than the originals...?

just hate to take the plenum off again...

I had the same problem on my old 3vze with a gasket rebuild kit I bought when rebuilding the motor. The fuel rail will cut the o-rings if they're not the exact same size. Took me twice to figure out they were the wrong size. I got new ones from Kragen that were the correct size and had no more problems.

that's exactly what happened it seems. when I got the old ones out...it seems that they were shaved? and had 'unpeeled' around the edge.

I got a replacement set that seem to fit better. I'm wondering if it would help or hurt to put a tiny amount of oil or grease or something to help them not cut again?

I put a little bit of vaseline or oil on mine. Helps them slide in without cutting .

Yep, coat the o-ring in vaseline and gently twist the injector (as if they were threaded) until the injector bottoms out.

o.k.....

I put on the new o-rings and oiled them slightly to ease them in. and this time I put them up into the fuel rail first and then fit the whole assembly down into the intake.

seemed to work fine, then yesterday, after running it for probably less then 20 miles, number three is leaking again!!!!! I twisted it to try and lessen it but it really started spraying then...

so what do I do differently now? I thought these o-rings fit better and looked tighter than the others?

and I even inserted them (by twisting as suggested) then removed them to see if there was any cutting and there wasn't?

I'm kind of at a loss...and don't really even want to touch it for at least a week!!!

Mna that sucks dont it? Just got done puttin the truck together after a complete rebuild. went to start it tonight and 3 out of 4 are leaking put new injector insulators from toyota in and used the o-rings from the gasket kit thought mine were skinnier too. Goin by the stealership tomorrow and get yota o-rings and yeah i lubed mine with a dab of engine build up oil. What a pain.

According to my 84 factory service manual, in bold it states "Do NOT use motor oil to lubricate o-rings." That's why I used Vaseline. No problems.

Guess I'll work up the energy to change out the leaker and use some vasoline this time....

foot0069, did your's start leaking right away? both times, mine has taken about 5-10 minutes of driving to show up. longer this last time?

Also, are you supposed to tighten down the fuel rail til it bottoms out on its stops? I've been assuming so, since it actually rests against two flat areas and the injectors are still 'floating' somewhat? but thought I'd ask....

Insert injectors into fuel rail ,Lightly lubricate with vaseline,do not twist injectors when inserting,just slide straight in. If you twist they can get cut or twisted themselves. Very very carefully ease injectors in. They have to go in as straight as possible to prevent any nicks or cuts.
Took me 3 times to get mine aligned. I would insert them all fire it up and no. 3 would leak,then redo and no. 4 would leak. Just be patient .

Yup leaked after just cranking the motor a little bit, hadnt even fired yet, prolly a good thing as the header was still open. Fixed and running tonight YIPEE YAHOO got new o-rings P/N 90301-07001 and grommets P/N 90480-13005. I had already replaced the bushing's that go between the injector and the intake. The brand new o-rings from my gasket set looked swelled up and sorta mushy. The factory ones are definitly chunkkier. Plus the old grommetts were really quite stiff prolly not seating good. And yes the rail tightens against the manifold seats. The injectors will still twist around some after you put it back together but shouldnt have any play, side to side movement. And I cant see a little oil hurtin anything, but who knows.

I'll give it one more try (or maybe more!) but who knew it would be this hard to injectors to seal....geez

anyway, I'm guessing that maybe the twisting is what did mine in... I suppose trying to line them up to reattach the elect. connectors could have sliced the new o-rings apart?

Is this that common? I had know idea.
